Not sure when it first appeared, but I have an empty album named "Favorites" in Photos occupying valueble screen space immediately below Recents. I can't delete it when I edit my albums, it just sits there doing nothing. Is there any way to get rid of it? Don't want it, don't need it, don't see why I ever would.

No you can't. I'm pretty sure in iOS 12 it was automatically hidden when nothing was in there and appeared when you hit the heart icon to favorite a photo.

Maybe it's a bug.
Maybe it will be reverted to its old way.

I would very much like to ignore it but there's a giant uniform black square in the middle of the screen whenever I open the Photos app. Kinda hard to ignore.
