how do i rename my mac?

ok i just baught a used imac g5, for the user profiles i try to delete the guys name for the profile,but it keeps on re-appearing after a restart or log on or whatever, i wanna rename this imac. i try to delete the folder of the guys name and the house icon of the guys name but they keep on re-appearing..... help please! yes this is my 1st mac.

Delete the user in system preferences. Make sure you ask it to delete the user's home directory as well. Create a new user for yourself, if you haven't already.

I've thought about this one before, and realized its quite a pain to do. The user name is built into almost everything in the OS. I would say do a full software restore on the machine (since you bought it 2nd hand). There should be a DVD with the machine that has this written on it. That will start the computer up as if it was brand new. You'll be able to setup the computer as you like.

What is the short name of the computer? iMac? I don't get what y'all are trying to change...

On my computer, the short name might be, say..."ham".

The long name could be, say..."ham_man".

You can change the long name via System Preferences and User. However, you cannot change the short name this same one as it is embedded in too many things in the computer (I think), and likewise would be too difficult. I think that the create a new user is a good plan to change the short name. Never even thought of that...

It's the same thing in my experience, unless your network settings are overriding the name you set (sometimes with DHCP you're assigned a hostname that replaces the one you set).

Sorry; I think this guy is talking about getting rid of a user account, not renaming the Mac. (That's the only place where the term "short name" comes up for me).

I would create a new user account (make it an admin account if you own the machine), and then delete the account you're trying to get rid of. This is all done on the "Accounts" pane of System Preferences.

I'm pretty sure the first account created on a new Mac is semi-permanant, eg it can't be deleted or renamed, even tho other accounts can be. The solution is to do a total reinstall, start fresh. If you didn't get the software DVD... well, I'll just assume you did.

The name you set there is also used for your computer in the Finder sidebar. So, I assume that these are the same, just as rinseout said.
