How do I reset password for encrypted external drive?

I erased an external drive and used the "OS X Extended, Journaled (Encrypted)" option to recreate it.

I could have sworn that I put the password I chose into 1Password, which I use to manage my password, but it's not in there.

Now, when I turn on the external drive, it asks me for a password and I don't have it. I've entered a dummy password into the field and hit "unlock" several times, but it does not give me any option for resetting the password.

Is there any way to reset the password? When I used FileVault to encrypt my boot drive, I chose the option of using iCloud to reset my password. But I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the encrypted external drive.

There is no way to reset the password on a drive you have encrypted with Disk Utility like that. Your only option is to use Disk Utility to reformat the disk then encrypt again with a new password.

Thank you. That's what I just did. Fortunately I have two backups of the data on that drive, so it will be relatively painless.
