how do I return my computer to a clean slate?

Hello all,

I'll be starting a new job next week and my current employer has asked that I wipe my current computer in anticipation of the new person coming in for my position. They just want it restored to it's factory sent state, where I'll just make a general user log in and the next person can set it up how they like it.

So... how would I do that? Without a Mntn Lion install disk? I'm on 10.8.3

I actually did it this weekend...

I created a bootable usb stick via this guide http://macs.about.com/od/diyguidesprojects/ss/usbflash.htm

And then I booted from the usb and reformatted the computers hard drive.

Then I installed the OS on the computer's hard drive and when it restarted, it was like a new computer.

If you are not particularly concerned the new user using recovery tools to bring back your data, you could just make a new admin account and from that account delete your account and be done with it.

If you really want to wipe the drive and start fresh, do a command-r boot to recovery then start Disk Utility and erase Macintosh HD. Then quit Disk Utility and click install OS. It will take some time as the 4.7GB installer downloads over the Internet.

ohh.. a new user account. I didnt think of that. Hmm... that might actually be the best option as there a bunch of programs (Adobe Creative Suite) that I would have to reload. Would this keep the programs on the computer, and then I can just re-set them in the new user account?

Yes... all the apps would still be there. The new user could just start running them and save their docs in their own new account. You would not need to do anything.

This does sound like the best option for you. With those Adobe apps you will have to reinstall and reenter serial numbers if you wipe the drive and reinstall the OS. Big hassle.
