Hi there, I have a very specific problem, so please read this carefully before replying, as you may offer the wrong advice.

I have a PSD that contains all the UI elements of the iPhone interface on one screen - many, many buttons, bars and indicators, many of which have nested layers etc. Please would someone tell me how I visually identify the item I need on the screen (NOT in the layers list, but actually by clicking the layer by visual recognition) and subsequently cause said layer/layer tree/nest of layers to identify/reveal themselves in the layers list on the right hand side of the Photoshop interface?.

See attached explanation, thanks.

Not knowing and just trying it out now, revealed CMD+click works. But when layers are in groups it only selects the group the layer is nested in.
The Move tool (V) has to be active though.

with the move tool active, check the box for auto select in the options bar.

then you can click on an item in the document and that layer will be selected

Thankyou so much for all the advice folks; I have worked out what to do now. :D
