How do I separate kids and parents' movies and tv shows? (tagging)

Hello,

I want to do something simple. I have a large library of movies and TV shows that need to appear separately on AppleTV, for kids and for parents.


Movies - Parents -Movie1
-Movie2
-Movie3

- Kids -Movie1
-Movie2
-Movie3

How do I do this? right now it's a big mess since all the kids movies are moxed up with the parents' movies. I would appreciate it if you had a solution.

There are a couple of ways to do this easily.

1. Separate them by genre. You could put all the kids movies in the same genre.

2. Put all the kids movies in a separate iTunes library that is set up to stream to the AppleTV. This could be done with a separate user account or a separate computer. The kids library would be selectable from the "Shared Movies" menu item.

Or, you could just tag them according to ratings? And set the rating on the kid's AppleTV to like below 14+ or something like that. Other than that, I'm not really sure how AppleTV works seeing as I don't have one myself

Manage Multiple Libraries

I think what you really want to do is keep things separate. To really do that and not have duplicates of everything you can created different iTunes Libraries for different users.
If you hold the ALT/OPTION key while iTunes is starting up you can create a new iTunes Library or choose an existing one. This is what I do to keep my kid's music and movies and the wife's music and movies separate from my own. The last thing I want to go from The Ramones to Van Halen to Celine Dion.
Playlists just don't cut it, cuz you end up with too many, plus it means you have to create playlists every time you import new stuff. This is simpler, you can import music or movies and they will not be seen by the other users unless you import them into their library.

^ I agree with the above – separate libraries is the way to go – but there is no need to create separate libraries using the ALT/Option button.

OS X already has a built in user system. Just create different User Accounts on your Mac for each user in your house (or group of users: You, Wife, Kids). Then when on TV, simply switch the source according to which content you want to load.

i would just use genres like was said before. multiple libraries is a hassle if your wife likes some of the same music that you do, or you want your kids to be able to watch star wars, but you consider that a "you movie," etc.

tag all little kid movies as kid or children's or whatever, and the rest as what they actually are, and browse by genre.

yhup thats the way to do it.

you want your kids to be able to watch star wars, but you consider that a "you movie," etc.

How is it a "You" Movie it is rated U which means everyone.

TV Shows

I tag all my kids movies and TV Shows and I tag the name of the show "Kids Movies". I wish I could do this in Movies but it does not allow it. Movies is now only non-kids movies so the kids only go to TV Shows and select "Kids Movies". It works well for me.
