Hi all,

I recently have been interested in buying a Playstation 3 because of it's versatility and all round good reviews. I would have no problem with connecting it via HDMI to my HD TV. The thing is that I have a 5.1 surround sound system that I would like to take advantage of and connect it to the PS3. It's currently directly connected to my DVD player (which I would replace once I purchased the PS3). I suppose I could connect the PS3 via the Aux. option, but I would really like to get rid of that bulky DVD player. My question is:
How do I connect a PS3 to my 5.1 surround sound system?

Thank you,

Ams.

The best method really is to get an optical audio-in cable to connect your sound to the PS3. If this can't work for any reason, you can route your audio-out from your TV via its audio out to the system as well. Alternatively, you can connect the PS3 to the TV with a component cable and just connect the two audio signals to the stereo instead of the TV. Hope that helps!

hmm... I'm not sure... My DVD surround sound Player is kind of old... (4-5 years) I don't think it has optical audio (it doesn't even have component output!). It connects to the speakers via the "black and red?" wires that connect via a flipping mechanism. I don't know what they're called!

Sorry If it doesn't make any sense!

i don't know much about home theater but my brother has his PS3 hooked up to a receiver via HDMI and the receiver handles the xbox/wii/cable/PS3 etc

I'm aware of set-ups with HDMI etc. but my DVD Player (which is hooked up to the surround sound) isn't capable of HDMI or even component. I couldn't tell you the model now, but I will research it (It's a JVC branded player).

Thanks so far for your help,

Ams.

PS: Tomorrow I'm away on a trip and won't be able to attend to this thread until Saturday. Thanks once again.

Then the only option you have if your dvd player doesnt support optical or hdmi is to use the analog white and red audio jacks.
It will only support stereo sound and not the full surround sound. Either go from the tv back to the sound system or use the cables that came with the ps3 to go into the sound system and make sure analog audio is selected on the ps3's menu.

The simple answer would be to hook up your PS3 the same way your DVD player was hooked up... since you'll be replacing it, just plug in the PS3 using the old connections.
