I want to use a Windows application (Palringo) on my iBook, but I do not want to emulate full-blown Windows. I heard about WINE, but it seems pretty tricky to set up. Anybody want to walk me through it. NOTE: I think it requires X11, but I do not have any OS X discs. Where can I download X11?

You might want to consider CrossOver, it's based on Wine (and they contribute code back to Wine) but has installation wizards and some proprietary bits to make it even more compatible with more Windows applications that regular Wine cannot run.

I'm not sure the X11 for download is the same version on the Tiger and Leopard DVDs.

I tried CrossOver it works fine for the program the offer...

But I couldn't manage to installe Internet Explorer 6 in the same bottle as MS Office 2003.

Further the fonts looked really terrible...

I didn't manage to install any other program that wasn't in there list.

After a few days I deleted it, and tried VMWare, at least together with bootcamp, I can configure everything the way I like it... And if you like me have a few old windows XP CD's around (old PC, laptop), that is almost the almost the easiest way. The price difference between those 2 programs is not that big...

IE6 needs a win98 bottle, Office 2003 needs a win2000 bottle. Both work 100% in their own bottles though, and is the way they are intended to be run, that's exactly how I run it.

CrossOver will run those particular applications with much better performance, much lower memory needs, and no Windows code required (don't forget the price of a Windows license if you're comparing costs), so I'd not dream of running IE6 or Office 2000 under Fusion or Parallels... it's a whole lot of unnecessary overhead when CrossOver does those much, much better.

Obviously though, CrossOver's not a great general Windows application solution, as there are plenty of other Windows applications that don't work quite right under Crossover. That's where Fusion/Parallels really shine, outside of most games, they run a copy of real Windows on top of OS X, so almost everything works right.

Guys, he has an iBook, so no CrossOver for him...

Ah an iBook is not an Intel Mac

Yep that's how I got it working, but I wanted to use InternetExplorer for Webdesign and for updating Office 2003. I tried to work in Office 2003, but it looks so primitive that it didn't feel right.

I needed VMWare, because I need a few other programs too, like Visual Studio/Sql Server for my work. And with VMWare I can stay within OSX for most of the time....

And like I wrote before, I already have paid for windows XP, so VMWare is not that much more expensive than the crossover solution...
