How do I start from scratch?

Ok, dumb question. I migrated my old machine to my new one, and I'm not happy with the results. My preferences didn't migrate. My old home folder did, but it won't let me access it.

How do I get rid of everything to start from scratch? Just reboot from the OSX disc and reinstall the OS?

Yup, do a clean install (aka erase and install).

The OS install says it will take up 8gigs, and I noticed it was installing a bunch of other languages. Is there some way to select what exactly is installed and what's not so that I can keep the OS install a bit smaller (at the cost of some of the foreign languages, etc?

Absolutely.

At some point (it's been a while, so I forget), there's a "Customize" or "Options" or "Expert" or something like that button on the bottom of the install screen, on the same screen (I think) as the button to start the install. Press it, and you can not only remove any (or ALL) foreign languages, but you can also eliminate printer drivers you'll never need, and some of them are quite massive as well.

use monolingual after finishing the install to remove other languages

is there a simple way to remove extra printer drivers? Not an issue for me, but those with limited disk space could probably recover a fair amount of room.

If you're doing a complete from-scratch erase and install, I don't see why you couldn't just force a shutdown with the power button, then reboot holding down 'C' to ensure it goes to the install DVD to boot, then install again.
