How do i stop this?

When i open an pdf thru preview
i see couple of pdf files open too, i don't know why
same is the case with photo's, if i open a photo with preview i see couple of photos open along with the one i want to open.
I noticed the same behavior with microsoft word too.
Can any one share some perspective on this one please

Close the individual photos, docs, etc. before closing the app

Hmm, I'm running 10.8.2.
You don't have that under System Preferences -> General ?

That setting in System Preferences should work under ML. Alternatively, I believe you can also use option-command-Q when quitting Preview to prevent previous files from being opened.
