Recently I've noticed when using preview that when I open info for a picture to view the EXIF data (yellow arrow) it also activates visual look up, and in this example brings up a dog's paw icon (red arrow) and if I click this it gives the information shown in the second picture. Is there a way to turn off visual look up so that when I'm checking the photo info I don't also get the annoying icons? I've checked preferences and also googled and didn't find anything.

You have to turn off Siri Suggestions:
You may have to quit and reopen Preview after doing that before it takes effect.
Turn off Siri Suggestions for Spotlight on Mac
You can turn off Siri Suggestions for Spotlight on your Mac, as well as Location Services for Spotlight.
