How do I unlock/jailbreak my iphone 2g. I do not have a SIM card!

Hi,

I bought my iphone 2g off ebay, and I DO NOT own a single SIM card, but I'm interested in unlocking/jailbreaking the iphone--to use as an ipod until I switch carriers to T-Mobile in a few months--how exactly do I proceed in doing this, seeing as how it won't let me connect to iTunes; and the phone is always in the emergency mode?

Will borrowing a T-Mobile sim card from a friend of mine make this possible? I really don't want to bother with that, but if that's the ONLY way then, I guess I will...
