Okay, so plugging this iPad Mini 4 into a MacBook Air running Big Sur and trying to update via Finder, it tells me “This version of the software is the current version”. I’ve been through numerous attempts - trying under Mojave to use iTunes and pointing it to an IPSW file for iOS 14 to do a restore and it says “the iPad could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible”. Needless to say, I’ve also tried putting it into DFU mode and no luck. Trying to update over the air from the iPad itself and it thinks it’s got the latest version.

So I’ve pretty much hit a brick wall now - any further avenues to explore would be gratefully appreciated!

Are you sure it's iPad mini 4? If you are trying to check for updates from the iPad itself, have you checked if there might be any profiles installed that might be affecting its ability to check for updates?

I agree with C DM about whether it's an iPad Mini 4. If 9.3.5 is the highest version it can run, it's the original iPad Mini. I hope you didn't buy it from someone who told you otherwise.

What's the Axxxx number on the back?

...ah I was told it was a Mini 4 but am having doubts now. Would explain why it’s stuck at 9.3.5 if it’s actually a 3

And just been able to read the number - yeah, first gen. I’ve been trying to help someone out but looks like it’s been a bit of a wild goose chase! Many thanks for your help guys!
