It seems that the new and improved lock screen uses a lot of 3D touch. Thats fine, but I'm on an iPhone 6, and won't be getting a new iPhone until next year. So how do people like myself reply to a message (just as one example) from the lock screen?

Seems like the most logical gesture to be. Tap would want to launch the app the notification is for. Long press is more similar to how a 3D Touch would be.
On the lock screen? How would you scroll if you had more than a few notifications?
Pull down already exists to quick reply on an actual banner notification in iOS when you're phone is on.
But these new Rich Notifications are new on the lock screen. The most known example being what we've seen with 3D Touching an iMessage notification on the lock screen to bring up the conversation + keyboard to reply and see new messages as they come in, without leaving the lock screen or going fully into the phone or app.
