I realize that there isn't an apple online store for China (where macs are made)
So how to people in China buy a mac? Or, do they sell macs in China?

They have retail stores in China, I've been there.
China is not what you think it is, it is a pretty modern city.
From McDonalds to Nike to Prada, you can find all those retail stores in China.
I mean real ones, not fake ones. Of course, you can also find fake ones.

Most of china isent that advanced even though some parts are very advanced. Rural china is still bad. But Beijing, Shangai, and Hong Kong are pretty modern and you can find Apple computer's easily there.

Shanghai has facilities that'll blow most other cities away. Shanghai is the economic center of China, and with their booming economy, their constructing at lightning speed. Many of their hotels, even mid-tier ones, feature fully automated rooms, like voice activated lights, automatic shower controls, etc. When you hear about how the average salary in China is only a quarter of the average American salary, while this is true for the vast majority, ~90% of the population, this DOESN'T apply to the cost cities. Costs there rival any expensive US city (New York, Boston, LA).
Mac hardware can be easily found in Shanghai and Beijing. The problem is finding retail software. Most stores usually only carry the hardware, so anything besides iLife and iWork, you'll have to have it shipped from someone or a store like Amazon.

Now that is the understatement of the year. :p

I wish London was as wired and modern as those cities… Just compare Hong Kong's MTR with London's tube network for a start… :(

What's wrong with the tube?

I don't think Apple has any retail outlets in China but there are many resellers (like Bestbuy) all over China.

Buy in China?

By the way, does anyone know if it's actually cheaper to buy a mac in China? And are tourists allowed to do so without having to pay expensive taxes? In fact my father is going to shanghai in october and i0m thinking about upgrading my first generation Macbook...
