In Bootcamp I follow the guidelines as stated for installing Windows XP Professional. However, after selecting the size of the required Windows partition during the Bootcamp Assistant install, it automatically goes into copying the appropriate windows files into 'whatever'. On Restart it gives me the "Press any key to boot from CD. Disk Error. Press any key to restart". Pressing any key DOES NOT work and I can only get out of this by turning off the computer. I have run a search on these forums to see if there is a solution to this and the response is essentially that I have to "format the partition to either the FAT or NTFS. I am following the install disk BUT it does not give me the option to format the windows partition. What am I doing wrong?

Turn on Mac, but press/hold the option key until you see two images of hard disks, one label Macintosh HD and the other Windows. Use the arrows keys to select Windows and press enter.

I had the same issue. See this thread for the fix that worked for me...

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/738054/

FYI: Once I got XP successfully installed - it would not pass the Windows Validation Scan. While I had XP up and running, I could not update all (I could do some) of the patches.

I submitted a counterfeit software claim through MicroSoft and they provided my with a spiffy new copy of XP Pro. I purchased my copy from eBay and had to provide this information to MS. Although I don't like 'ratting' on people the SOB eBayer did in fact sell me a very real looking (holograms, Product Key, COA, sealed) fradulent copy of the OS.

Thanks all for the informative replies! I am in the process of trying what you suggested Mac & Beanz as I have been undergoing the exact same symptoms experienced by you! I also purchased my Windows XP Professional through ebay and it sounds like it also may be a fraud! Will update this thread once i have success!
