How do we know if a file is on iCloud Drive?

I just uploaded a 75GB folder to my iCloud Drive and following that I have 2 questions.

1st is there an upload indicator somewhere to let me know that it's being uploaded? I mean a file that size won't be instantly uploaded..

2nd I thought a file uploaded to iCloud Drive would remain in my mac (until I deleted, basically like a transfert to a USB stick?), but it was just transferred it seemed weird that it would just delete the original. Anyway, if the original is not in my computer anymore why don't I have 75 more GB of usage in my computer?

I'm really confused, any help will be appreciated at this point. Thanks

icloud drives works like dropbox.

if the file is on the server, its also on your computer. you can't sync specific folders yet... and i'm not sure if there is an indicator for when its done uploading.

so every file in icloud drive will appear on your OSX as a downloaded file. the file isn't just in the cloud... if you delete the file from your OSX, it will delete it on the cloud.

Oh Really!? Wow.. what a disappointment if true. I just bought 200GB to free up my computer.. Correct me if I'm wrong but the files in my dropbox did not actually take room on my computer? Right? I always had a much smaller capacity with Dropbox maybe I just never noticed.

Unless you selectively synched certain folders only.

The best way to check and see if the file has been uploaded to iCloud is to go to iCloud.com and see if it is there. I've been uploading all of my pictures (50GB) and check there regularly to see how the uploading is going.

iCloud is on both your computer and remotely with Apple.

If you've uploaded 75GB into the iCloud Drive in your Sidebar (see screenshot), you've in effect moved it into a special folder on the computer for it to sync with storage at Apple. This does not reduce space on your computer.

In fact if you have two computers and your iCloud Drive setup on both, then you have the same data in three places.

Removing a file in your iCloud Drive Folder, removes it remotely.

Dropbox does the same thing, there is a folder on your computer which syncs up to Dropbox Storage online.
Dropbox also includes a method called Selective Folder Sync, so it will not sync folders from Dropbox Online Storage to your computer.

Of course if you use iCloud or Dropbox apps on your mobile devices, you are accessing the cloud based files - it does not sync the whole lot to your phone.

The only real way to stop it taking up space on your computers is to remove the dropbox app from your computer, or disable icloud drive from System Preferences, and only use the web browser based management tools (dropbox.com / icloud.com), I do that for dropbox.
