How do we know something is in 1080p?

In netflix it doesn't tell you what size HD it is. How do you tell its outputting in 1080p? Other things how do you know it isn't doing 720?

Judging by a picture from a review from The Verge, certainly for iTunes purchases/rentals, a '1080p' icon will appear alongside the film information.

No idea if this applies to TV Shows or Netflix as my Apple TV won't be arriving until tomorrow.

got mine this morning. in netflix it just says HD but doesn't tell you the size. I'm pretty sure netflx only has a few things in 1080p just not sure which. Also i don't know if the appletv upscales content from 720p to 1080p?
