how do you back up... I thought it was automatic??

I searched the forums under a few things but have not found out how to back up your iPhone onto iTunes.
Does it just do it automatically? I thought it should because I have resotred it before and when it synced it synced in all my info. So when you sync your iPhone is that a back up?

I guess the reason I am confused is because when I go under iTunes preferences in the box where it says "the following iPhones are backed up on this computer" it is blank???

when you sync, it backs up your phone...contacts and all that.

Just thought about this:

Will it only allow you to backup on the original computer you put the iPhone on? Because that is the only computer that has a backup.

Your iPhone is a copy of what you have on your Mac so, in essence, your iPhone is the backup, not the other way around. Only when you change things on the iPhone, like calendar or contact entries, do the two diverge, and they re-sync when you dock.

If your iPhone gets lost or stolen, you will still have everything on your Mac except for new entries made and photos taken since the last sync.

iTunes does backup more than just your photo and calendar events. There are items that your computer does not store that your iPhone does and is backed up within your iTunes backup. For instance text messages are backed up and same with phone settings and google maps remembered searches. There is a backup that does take place and when you restore an iPhone those items do reappear after a full erase. No doubt it is not backing up all your music and photos because that would be redundant, but there are items that are unique to the iPhone that are iPhone based that is being backed up.

To the TC,

I would assume that the backup only takes place on the base computer. I can see this being the case for security reasons. as to how to change the base computer, you got me.
