How do you backup?

So since iOS 5's been out, have you been backing up to iCloud or your computer?

I've been backing up to iCloud for convenience, but still a bit scared of it if goes wrong!

to back up you need to connect you iphone to you computer

-go to itunes
-connect iphone
-right click on "users iPhone" or whatever you named it
the select "back up" in the drop down list
-iTunes will do the rest

again for icloud
just go to settings
-iCloud and back up now
but im sure you aware of that

On my iMac.....About once a week....Wirellesly do it more now than I used to....Seldom connect to the dock now unless low battery charge or (hopes) IOS update.

I backup and sync with my windows home server. It's a raid 5 array so I am not too scared to lose anything. I also have it once a day sync important folders in my server to an external.

I am looking at cloud backup for at least some of my server, in case of a fire or some natural disaster.

iCloud doesn't have enough space to backup my iPhone (without paying extra for it), and even if it did, I refuse to put any of my data on the iCloud for security and privacy reasons.

Besides, backing it up to my Mac, which in turn is backed up to an external hard drive, works perfectly well thank you.

I was reluctant to back up to iCloud because I thought I'd have to buy extra space to contain all my apps. But then I read the apps and basic OS stuff don't count toward iCloud data use. So, I now back up my iPh4 and iPad2 and still have something like 3 gigs left of my 5. It's really convenient, but there is always that chance of an iCloud issue, so periodically, I backup to iTunes.

I think you can still go in to iTunes and force it to backup to the computer even if you normally back up to iCloud.

I think this is best...use iCloud normally but do a computer backup once a week or so.

Until a restore from the cloud is less jumbled, I'll still backup to iTunes.

Though I do wish we had the option to do both.

I have a passion for keeping my personal and private data to myself and not entrusting it to any cloud service.

Therefore I have a very robust primary home network with one Mac Pro as my dedicated server. Included is a Synology 1511+ NAS and local iTunes backup. The beauty of this setup is the massive five drive 1511 which provides plenty of room for backing up my five Macs, and five PC's on the network. It's also isolated from the web so there's no way for it to be compromised.

My secondary network is connected to the web. I use a few cloud services via this setup. Dropbox, Evernote and Google are among those that contain working files but nothing that is confidential or personal.

Safe secure and with plenty of room to spare, it's a system of networks that gives me great peace of mind.

This. Been doing it for a while and hasn't been a problem. Seems to be the best way to go about it. If anything, you could sync to iTunes more frequently, but for me any longer would be too risky

I feel this is why they make it necessary to have a WiFi connection to backup with iCloud

i'm pretty sure your information is more secure in iCloud than on your home computer. anyone can steal your computer and take your data easily.

with iCloud, it would take a little bit of trouble to getting to your data.

If someone stole my computer, they'd have a pretty hard time getting through the encryption on my home folder if they wanted my data. Ditto on the backup drive.

On iCloud, your data's on a bunch of servers which are constantly fighting off hack attacks, unless you're someone who thinks, even after groups like LulzSec have hit so many sites, server farms are a perfectly safe place to store your data?

Also remember that it's also about who controls that data. If it's on your computer, you control it. You know where that data is and you know that it's deleted when you delete it and so on. Cloud services... Not so much. Facebook famously keeps all data from deleted accounts, and we have no idea whatsoever what Apple do with your iCloud data should you choose to delete it, meaning that this stuff could all be leaked if the service got hacked.

And hey, all it realistically takes for someone to get all of your data is for them to get your iTunes password. That's it. ONE password, all your personal data.

In the event of a wider scale hack of the service, we're not just talking about your name, address, and so on leaking, we're also talking about your personal data leaking. This not only makes identity theft easy, but it could end up potentially embarrassing for you personally. Happen to have a few naughty pics on your phone? Maybe some private e-mails to your iCloud account? Well they're now linked to your real life identity, publicly, online, forever.

Now, it is of course true that a desktop computer isn't 100% secure either, but the balance of probability says that a major server farm is a lot more likely to become the target of a hacker.

So, to conclude, I will keep my data firmly on my encrypted hard drives, and you can keep handing over all your data to Apple so they can learn all about you and keep your personal documents on some servers which you have no control over.

I have a 512 kbps upload on my home internet connection. Screw Time Warner.

Backup through itunes once a week usually on sunday, and backup to icloud on weds.

Figure I backup to both and I just never will have an issue if I have a computer crash or whatnot.
