I just bought some airpods from my local store and want to get ap+ but I do not know how. I tried navigating my phone but saw no options. Do I have to take them to an apple store to purchase it?

You may also have to call Apple directly if you didn’t buy the AirPods directly from Apple, so they can register them to you and then add AppleCare...If the above link doesn’t work, go here and scroll down to the section “ how to buy “...

Can anyone clarify the total cost of replacement that includes the charging case as well?

It does cover the charging case but apple will only replace what is faulty. So if one of your airpods develops a fault, they will replace that component only. They wont replace the other or the charging case

i Believe you will get full replacement if you happen to drive over the case with the earphones in it. The wording for accidental damage is bit lacking, as it states 2 accidental damages for $39. So im assuming it would cover all incase you break everything.

Let say my AirPod pro is in the washer and I want to get a replacement, I only need to pay $39?

I believe so, AppleCare for AirPods is a brand new warranty they recently started offering so I am not 100% since their wording on their site doesn’t go into much detail. But from what I’m reading sounds like everything can be replaced for $39 at once, or if you have a single bud that needs to be replaced it would be $39 also. Hopefully someone could chime is that has done accidental Damage warranty replacement

Check the AirPods repair page below. Accidental is covered with a $29 fee, on top of the already purchased, $39 AppleCare. So, if you damaged both AirPods, which would be typical, then you'll be spending $29 + $29 + Previously purchased $39 + tax. Which is $100 + tax. Damage the AirPods and Case? Then it's $129 + tax to replace them. Almost the cost of the GEN2.

For my understanding it’s $29 for left and right AirPods and another $29 for the charging case
After having OG AirPod, I might go with Apple care this time

Slightly. However, I was just stating that Apple couldn't offer it if they weren't making money on the AppleCare purchases for these. I'd believe out of all of the AppleCare covered products, that these are at the highest risk of loss and damage. Some may say the iPhone but I've not researched any collected data, other than what would seem more likely. Essentially, you could lose or damage two of them. I failed to read the part of two incidences maximum. So, this essentially, keeps you from being able to replace both AirPods and Charging case. Say, in an incident that you dropped them in a puddle, washed them, or some other calamity.
