I recently bought an Apple TV appliance and have it connected to my TV and Home Theater sound system.

It is a very nice device and have been enjoying watching Commercial Free TV shows and such BUT...

All of a sudden, it is now gettting an error that says I have no more disk space when trying to rent a TV show.I checked every menu on the Apple TV and see no way to delete files.
I use an XBOX360 for the same purpose but it has a menu that lets you delete files when the disk gets full.

So, how do I delete some files on the Apple TV to get more disk space? I think it is somehow connected with Itunes but really do not know.

Thanks for any help

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3G: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

Go into iTunes and select the ATV then select custom sync and only sync what you want. It will remove what is not synced.

Thanks for the VERY useful reply.I have read several posts trying to figure out how to delete stuff but I had trouble understanding what sync really meant but the way you worded it , it makes perfect sense.
" It will remove what is not synced"

I told it to only sync Selected Unwatched shows and the one I selected had a single episode. The Itunes SW said 'syincing' and 30 seconds later, the Apple TV device icon went from all Purple to nearly all White.

This question is asked alot as I saw plenty of posts to that effect yet all Apple needs to do is take your reply and make it a sticky somewhere.

You can also delete non-purchased items directly from the Apple TV that haven't yet been synced back to your PC/Mac. Thus, if you use the Apple TV to download a free podcast it will have a delete icon next to its listing on the Apple TV.

A have run into another problem but not sure when it occurred.

I recently rented a movie and when I selected 'My Movies' from the Apple TV console, it said that I did not have any movies. I then went to the list at the top of the TV screen where I could see the movie I had just rented and selected it there - it played just fine.

So I went about my business and forgot about this until it happended again last night.

The sync instruction that you folks gave me were great but the problem now is that my Itunes program has NO such sync choices on the Apple TV Device page. I think this is related to the above problem.

Any ideas how to get the sync choice to show up on Apple TV Device in Itunes program?
See enclosed screen snapshot

Thanks

Therein lies the problem and why I posted the screen snapshot.

I have NO options ie. NOTHING happens when I click on the Summary tab.

All I can do is switch between Photos and Summary and as I said, Summary only has what is in the screen snapshot.

The help file says to make sure I have the latest version of Itunes.
I have the Latest SW on the APTV Device as well as Itunes version 9.0.2.25

Thanks,
Joe

Then you have set up a streaming only library from iTunes to your Apple TV. If you originally had all the options to select Movies, TV Shows, Music, etc in iTunes under the Apple TV device that means you had set up a primary syncing library however you must have broken that link and then reset it to a streaming / shared only library.

See this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1143

This will tell you the differences between the 2 settings and how to set each one up

now I know why people hate apple so much.

here it is 11:00 and my stupid apple tv says that the disk is full yet there is no way to delete the last thing I watched so I am stuck.

I have NO menus on Itunes that allow me to do any syncing.

I hate this thing

Time for the xbox to the resuce

I deinstalled Itunes and then re-installed . I also did a factory restore on the ATV and it is now working.

What a POS

Sorry you're having trouble. I have three and I've not had any such difficulties.

Did you have "Sync" set to On? Right click on the AppleTV in the Devices list on the left column of iTunes. You'll see options for Syncing. Though since you chose the nuclear option, I guess you'll never know what the original error was.

Me, I don't store much on the Apple TVs themselves - they're all set up for streaming. I have a Mac Pro that (among other things) acts as the household iTunes server. It has no trouble streaming three different HD movies to each independent Apple TV. I only have the three most recent unwatched movies automatically pushed out to the Apple TVs themselves. I've got three 40GB models and never have more than 10GB on each; I see no need for the larger models unless you don't have a Mac or a PC that can be on 24/7 acting as an iTunes server (simply needs iTunes running in the background and can be completely hidden).

I love mine. I never have to touch another DVD and my kids can easily choose from any movie we have from any of our three main TVs.

I am not sure what fixed my problem. I reinstalled Itunes and did a complete system recover on the APPLE TV and all the syncing stuff is back.
Also, NO blank page as shown in my above post.

I really like the concept of 'on demand'.

I said a long time ago ,not that I am the only one of course, that when Broadband becomes ubiquitous that this would spell the end of the DVD.

If it were not for this economy, we would have a LOT more broadband enabled houses.

I keep the bare minimum Netflix subscription so I can use their Instant Watch movies but have not rented a movie in over a year.

Between my TIVO,XBOX,VUDU and APPLE TV I have all bases covered.

The TIVO lets me copy shows to my PC so I always have something there and the other devices let us watch whatever TV/Movie which fits the mood the family is in to watch.

Besides the TIVO because it is so versatile, my favorite Video appliance is the VUDU. Stream High Def quality shows with less than a minute wait and Blu Ray quality if yiou are willing to wait for 2 hours for the download.

That is only because they cap your download speed to 4 mbits/second in the setup menu which many of us have been begging them to raise.

Next step ,when we have secure servers, is Software as a Service.
