how do you enter a filename to open in textedit?

Is there some way to enter a filename when opening in textedit?

The hidden or system files for example, how to open with textedit?

Like ~/.ssh/known_hosts , or /etc/hosts . Windows will open hidden files or folders if you enter the path and filename into the open box.

All the interesting stuff is hidden to protect the "average" mac user, and nano is a bit basic.

Use the show hidden files option in Terminal to have at least the ssh option show up not sure on the system files if that works for them. You will want to make sure when saving those files opened in it that you do not get any of that rich text junked saved or you will be editing or restoring the file again to get it working once more. In short nano is your best option it will just do the job properly.

"sudo open /etc/hosts" should do it.

Edit: Hmm, the file is still read-only even with sudo. I guess it doesn't extend past the terminal.
