Now, how do you feel about your iPhone 5s/6/6s/7-10 or 11 or 12 in 2022? does it feel nice and pleasantly heavy like holding a bar of gold in your hand? does it shines so irresistibly, the Apple logo, the background it lies on, the trim at the front, like jewelry? Does it feel heavy and nice in your pocket? do you like the smooth command of the apps on your home screen, swiping them, and they quickly move around like the flow of a river, unlike on an iPhone 1, 3G, 3GS, and 4? Do you like the complete command of manipulating a webpage, it too moving smoothly up and down with momentum as you read the news? do you like the convenient of watching a quick information video without having to sit in a chair and starting up a computer, lying in your bed instead? Do you like starting up your iPhone to check the weather or set the alarm before you go to bed?

Now lets say all of this will be gone, replaced by this wearable in front of your eyes called "Magic Leap". Bar of gold? shine? heavy jewelry in your pocket? smooth interaction on a screen? Apple Pay? all gone and replaced.

Only one of these things will survive, the iPhone or Magic Leap, in the name of redundancy. How do you feel about replacing your iPhone as described above for this new technology?

I want to hear your mind very much on everything about this subject. Write out your concern, for an example, "if my iPhone will be gone, how will I set the alarm? do I set it on this glass?", "if my iPhone is gone, do I need to put on the glass to check the weather?", write about any concern you have of your utility, once on your iPhone, that you will now have to do on the Magic Leap glass instead. Or, if not this, write about any other concern or thoughts relating to the survival of only one of these technology, iPhone or Magic Leap, going forward.

Will give you background information on this technology so you can address this thread. Thanks!

I get motion sickness from first person shooter games, virtual reality goggles, even walking on a treadmill. I wish it wasn't so but it is what it is. I'm sticking with my iPhone.

I think we will eventually be at a point where we won't even require a display for the information we seek. I'm thinking Siri, but a really REALLY good Siri. We need advancements in AI more than anything and I think that's the next step.

If the question is whether I think this magic whatever you call it is the best step, I don't know. Do I think smartphones will forever be relevant? Not a chance. I don't see smartphones continuing in as we know them within another decade.

I can see it now. People just staring blankly into space instead of a screen.

"hey, why didn't you catch the ball?"
"sorry was reading my email"
"You were looking right at me"
"no I wasn't"

I disagree with the entire premise that only one will survive.

Magic Leap is interesting, but too different to gain traction in the smartphone space. Still relatively young, smartphones are far from the end of their usefulness.

I voted for the first option "I will use Magic Leap, my pocket will be empty and light." But I would like to clarify I don't know specifically if it'll be magic leap, something like it, or something else all together. I do think that smartphones as we know them right now will be a foreign concept to say... my children, if I ever adopt/have any.

I'm extremely interested in AR/MR whatever you want to call it, but the thing about mixing the computing world with the real world is it has to be nearly perfect in everything I need to do computing wise. If it's not perfect it won't be feasible to put it in with my surroundings and replace my other screens.

Some concerns would be;
Texting- If it's to replace my phone, how exactly do you do this with Magic Leap? It's not realistic to expect people to speak their texts out and let it transcribe. I can see conjuring up a smartphone in my hand virtually, but how do you text? The image would exist over your hands in your vision, correct? or does it make the parts that would cover your hands invisible so it looks like it's behind your fingers?
Typing- Again, if it's to replace another screen in my life.. my computer, how exactly do you do this? Does magic leap take a wireless signal from a keyboard I have on my desk? Is it THAT good at tracking finger movements to be able to rely on a virtual keyboard?
Wearability- I will say I wear both contacts and glasses. I will also say I don't wear my glasses much outside of my house. It really truly would have to be perfect for me to consider wearing it full-time out and about and use it as my phone. Honestly I could see it replacing my tablet, computer, tv, etc. before my phone. Those are all things I either use in my home or take out of a bag and use if I'm out. I could see taking out a pair of glasses to do what I do with those items more easily than I could with taking out glasses and putting them on to respond to a message, but if they're on all the time I need it to be there when I need it and unobtrusive. It would have to be very aware of my surroundings. It couldn't display anything in my vision if I was say driving or doing something else where a notification pop up would be potentially harmful.
Also, if it's wearable it will have to be even less obtrusive than our phones. I couldn't see myself wearing something bigger than a typical pair of glasses.
Sound- Do you wear earbuds? Does it have a speaker? Would everyone have to hear my phone calls as if I was on speakerphone? (something I literally never use) Or would it have a speaker designed intelligently enough to emit sound to your ear without obstructing it for real world sounds?

If all of that is addressed, I could whole heartedly see myself embracing something like Magic Leap. I'm just not so sure we'll be at a place in 2022 that we could truly replace a tangible device.

Right, this will really give new meaning to distracted driving. Honey, watch your speed! Honey, be careful you almost sideswiped that car. Honestly, ever since you got that Magic thing yesterday your driving has become terrible. Shush dear, I'm watching Game of Thrones..........squeeling tires..........crashing sounds........silence.

Another satisfied Magic Leap user bites the dust. Course if you have Apple self driving car you won't be driving.

In other news today, there has been a dramatic rise in pedestrian fatalities as people are walking into moving traffic. Authaurities are investigating, so far no leads. Back to you Wolf Blitzer...........thump....feels life I'm flying.....**** I just took the "Magic Leap"........lights go out.

Right, this will really give new meaning to distracted driving.

Your car could very well be driving itself by the time this is fully implemented. Some manufacturers have already implemented automatic safety breaking.

Today we have four screens:

Smartphone screen
Tablet screen
PC/laptop screen
Television screen

The current battle is to control all four screens. The next battle will be to do away with all four screens and use some type of head-up display like Magic Leap and Google Glass.

And even if we are still driving cars when this technology is fully implemented, it will automatically connect with your vehicle which will override through a safety protocol whatever happens to be distracting you at the moment your attention is needed on the road.

I hope within the next decade or two, we change our daily habits with life than staring on some screen reading useless opinions from people. I was walking around the town and I absolutely hate when a person walking in front of me suddenly stops to check on their phone especially if entering an escalator. 2010's will be the decade when smartphones and social media have truly hit mainstream. Yes, it is useful but also USELESS and time wasters.

I sermoned my female cousin who keeps staring at pictures. I asked her this is what you do all day? What useful information are you gaining from snooping around someone else's Facebook profile and looking at their photos? Learn something meaningful. I get the idea of staying connected and reading new feeds and sharing it. But stuff like FB, Instagram, Snapchat, and selfie addicts to gain virtual LIKES is pointless and unproductive to me.

So in some way, I DO WANT smartphones to be replaced to change what we do with our time instead of playing CoC all day or make a 20 year old song like "My Boo" go viral because of the Running Man Challenge. Or making Chewbacca Mom famous because of her laughter. Quite silly to watch stuff like that and then forget about it within months. I love smartphones and they are awesome to use. But I don't online, unproductive habits, and social media to consume us forever.
