It seems to me one of the major downsides to the AppleTV is the playback of rentals from like Redbox. How do you handle this?

Yeah, I'm with the others. I'm not sure I understand what your question is. By "regular rentals" you must mean DVD rentals, since you mention redbox, rather than 
TV rentals. At our house we watch those using our DVD player. You could rip the rented DVDs (e.g. with Handbrake, etc) to watch them via your TV, but that would mean waiting, suffering a slight quality loss, and not having access to the DVD 'extras'. Oh, and there's that pesky Digital Millenium Copyright Act, which makes it illegal, of course.

Some people get Mac Minis and use them as souped-up Apple TVs. Then you wouldn't need a separate DVD player.
When I rent a DVD. Redbox is my preferred solution. I think Apple's rental option is a little heavy handed.

I just usually buy my movies because here at college you end up watching them again. I usually watch movies once or twice because I watch for the story, then I look at the elements of how they make effects, different angles, and things that are more of a movie producer side because that rather interests me. But to me, the $3 rentals aren't bad for people like my sister or my mom who just watch it once and are done. Cheaper, and faster to get rather than going out to the store or waiting for it to be delivered to your house. So, it does all that I need it to do.
