As a long long time (2013) 10” iPad user, I hold my device with two hands L and R and use mainly my thumbs to tap. My purposes call for a new 13” now*), but it so appears I need to adjust my usual way of holding it. When I hold a 13” model as described above, my thumbs cannot comfortably reach the entire screen.
I don’t intend getting any magic keyboards, will use tapping mostly, only occasionally with pencil.

Any comments very welcome! Thank you.

*) apps to use on 13” are Lightroom mobile and Citrix. Then I will also use the device for apps that work better on 11” such as mail, movie watching, browsing internet, so the more consuming kind of things really.
I am aiming for one light do-it-all device.

I use the 13“ M1 (which is heavier than the M4) 1-handed simply and then use my other hand for “tapping“ the screen.

I tend to have my pinky and thumb in front of the screen, other three fingers behind, and hold it from the center-bottom that way while using the screen with my other hand

I used to try the two-thumb method, but a 13" screen is way too big for me to do that

I generally hold my M4 13” IPP in my left hand and scroll, tap, enter text with my right hand (using Apple Pencil or 1-3 fingers). I use it naked or with the Apple folio case. The Magic Keyboard is used mostly as a stand (best stand I have found for IPP) as I find touch input to be more efficient and better UX than a physical keyboard on the iPad.

Thank you for your great insightful replies. It’s quite clear that no one uses two thumbs, so that matches my own findings.
Also, most of you that hand hold it use one hand to hold the device and the other to operate the screen. That was also what I landed on when I tried the 13” in the store.
So the answer to my OP is yes the 13” calls for a different hand holding approach. So be it.

I intend to order one and then I will see how I like it after a week.

Great community here! Thanks again.

I use a lightweight case at times with mine when off the MKB. If I need to type/tap while holding, I'll cradle the iPad with one hand and laying across my forearm. I need the case as I find the bare iPad to be too slippery for my liking.
This is exactly how I do it. I don’t have a lightcase or anything, but I also have AppleCare+ in case anything happens.

13 inch isn't made to be used a lot of the time in your hands. 11 inch is ideal for that.

13 inch I think apple wants people to use with the keyboard

Some iPads support split keyboard, which lets you type with your thumbs. I don't know why 12.9" iPad apparently doesn't.

What I found insightful is that the M4 13” iPP on-screen keyboard shows the !@#$% keys whereas the 11” doesn’t, probably to save space. May not be a big deal for some, but for me it is because I create visual patterns for my daily used passwords, which include many of these special characters. So on the 11” keyboard I need to dive into another Keyboard mode to be able to even type those special characters and I also need to think hard about which characters I need. When I was in the store with the 11” iPP you could hear me think “Which character is the one above the 7 again?” and so forth.
