How do you keep your photos organized with Photos?

Hi,

Long time user of Aperture, and I've been trying Photos for a while, though I haven't made the switch completely.

The only thing keeping me from doing this is the management of my files.
I like having my library in my internal drive, and keeping all the photos referenced to an external drive. But the current problem is that if I import 100 photos to an Album, and then delete the 10 I didn't like in Photos, those 10 photos are only deleted in my library, but not from my external drive.

Which, as time passes by, would add up to a lot of space.

Has anyone found a workaround for this? I just don't want to go to Lightroom.

Hi Harry, I know you don't want to go to Lightroom, but after using Aperture you will be very limited by what Photos can offer you. Download the trial of Capture One. It's similar to Aperture in a lot of ways and will let you organise your photos properly.

I also have a referenced library and delete unwanted pictures already in Finder before importing to iPhoto.

I did give it a try.
It's ok I guess, but lately my photo needs have been decreasing a lot. And spending $299 for Capture One seems a little too much right now.

I went from taking around 10,000 photos per year, to around 1,500 this year.
And now my photos are mostly of family and friends. So the editing capabilities of Photos right now seem enough, specially since I still have Photoshop for the occasional special picture I want to further edit.

I can also see reasons why deleting from Photos should not automatically delete the referenced image. Generally, those who use referenced images (rather than simply keeping the entire library package on an external drive) want to manage their image library independently of Photos/iPhoto/Aperture. With iCloud Photo Library's "your photos deleted everywhere" behavior, a person can use referenced images to preserve their originals, while using iCloud Photo Library for other purposes.

You are right, some people might want to keep them in their external drive.

I'm realizing right now that the way I used Aperture was:
1. Import to Aperture. Not referenced.
2. Edit images and delete not wanted images.
3. Move after a month or so to external drive.

This can't be done in Photos as far as I have seen.
Some day maybe =).

Anything's possible, but most folks who used the big time DAM/PIE applications reference. All Lr users reference. Since those applications are where 90% of photo access goes on, there is little point to having photos that are not referenced. With applications like Aperture the reason to reference was access outside of Aperture and volume management (you could keep photos in a different place than the library itself).

Photos seemed to include the ability to reference photos as an afterthought: you can't move 'em around from within Photos, can't write metadata without exporting, can't delete from within Photos, can't include them in iCloud Photo Library, etc. It's just a really crappy tool if referencing is what you need; you'd be better off with even a photo browser instead.

Photos was supposed to be able to work with externally located photos out of the Photos Library. However I'm currently having issues to make it work like it. It was supposed to allow me to open another Library if I open the App while holding the option key and it doesn't.

IMO, the best way to switch between different Photos libraries is by simple double clicking on them in Finder. You can create a shortcut for each library and place them on your desktop. Than simply double click on the shortcut of the library that you want to use.

thanks for the tip. Actually it seems that my Logitech K750 wireless solar keyboard doesn't work with Mac OS X for opening Photos and iTunes with the option key depressed to then choose the library. It's weird.When I use the Apple keyboard it does work.
