iPad Pro How do you know you are watching HDR?

Hey guys, I just got a 10.5 iPad Pro for Christmas and I was really excited about watching movies in 1080p HDR. However, how the heck do you know you are watching a HDR film?! It is so confusing it makes my head hurt.

This is what is going on. A movie in the iTunes store will say 4K HDR/Dolby Vision. But the same movie in my library on the iPad Pro, it will only say HD. But if I go to the library on my phone and select the same exact movie, it says 4K HDR/Dolby Vision. WTH!!

Which one is correct? I know my iPhone 7 Plus cannot play HDR so I can ignore that part on my phone, but it still says HDR when on the iPad it just says HD. HOW DO YOU KNOW!?! Has anyone figured this out? It is really frustrating.

4K is the resolution of the image, 4x the resolution of regular HD. Neither your phone or your iPad Pro will play 4K resolution films, only regular HD.

HDR & Dolby Vision relate to the brightness, contrast between the brightest and darkest parts of the image and to the colour reproduction. HDR/DV both work on your iPad Pro but not your iPhone 7. HDR & DV work independently of 4K. You can have 4K without HDR/DV and you can have HDR/DV without 4K.

If films you’ve either bought or rented through iTunes have HDR or DV, your iPad Pro will play them in HDR/DV as long as you have ‘Download HDR Videos’ set to ON in Settings > TV

The Movies (if purchased in iTunes) will show an HDR Dolby Vision badge.

The thing is, Netflix app was supposedly updated to take advantage of HDR on the iPad Pro a while ago.

However, playing HDR content side by side in an iPad Air 2 and my IPP 10.5 shows absolutely no difference

I played wonder woman on my wife’s iPad Air 2 and on my iPad Pro 10.5 and the difference was pretty impressive. The iPad Air 2 looked fine, until you put it next to the Pro. It looked flat and washed out compared to the Pro.

Yup, I don’t have any HDR titles in my Plex library yet.

I asked because Netflix has HDR content and the app is allegedly HDR capable.

However, there is absolutely no difference between an iPad Air 2 and an IPP 10.5 when watching that content. I don’t think Plex takes advantage of HDR yet and I don’t buy content in iTunes (I need my movies platform agnostic).

So, I’m really glad to hear that there is an actual difference when using HDR, it gives me hope. Maybe Netflix can get its act together.

A total gimmick, a waste of time and money, like calorie free water, or a juicer for $600, I would just watch a normal movie/tv show, on the ipad the screen is so small, and to fit anything decent, you are going to have compression, so really buying a car that can do 200 mph but you are limited to 35mph..what is the point????

Not at all, normal video with limited range of colour and light/shadow VS full HDR display. It just looks much much better and yes, you CAN appreciate the difference on a smaller display.

I watched "Dunkirk" on my iPP 12.9" in HDR as I don't have any HDR TV or monitor. The difference was VERY noticeable. You can actually see way more tones of the same color instead of a sharp contrast and color switch from darker to lighter tone, much more details visible.

Re: Netflix, just about the only HDR titles are their own productions. Same for Amazon. On Amazon there's one big HDR title -- Skyfall.

BTW, I just learned that torrents or other rips claiming HDR are almost certainly not so. The decryption codes and file format for HDR content is only just getting cracked and probably only temporarily. There is a pretty high degree of pessimism regarding fundamentally cracking the format given how tightly the ecosystem is locked down.

The HDR titles might be captured from streams, although even the best legitimate streaming sources don't approach Blu Ray bitrate.

Maybe my info is dated -- the situation is rapidly developing. But just an FYI for anyone trying to conveniently watch their own purchased HDR discs.

Yes.

The 1080p films are around 4-5gb.

The HDR/Dolby vision are a lot bigger.

These are all the HDR films I have in my library at the moment.

Despicable Me 3 is the smallest in size at nearly 12gb.

As long as you have the “Download HDR videos” selected in the TV App settings then when you play it back it will play in HDR.

That’s really weird. I had multiple HDR movies on mine that I couldn’t watch without being connected to the internet. I’ll try again at some point.

God knows. I click on 4K HDR section of iTunes store. Movies will show logo if they support HDR. Most movies in that section aren't showing logo for HDR....4K only.

Then it says 4K HDR will only play through Apple TV. That means I have to buy a TV and Apple TV to watch 4K HDR even if I buy the movie on another device and can't possibly have a TV wherever I am going.

Depends on the title really. If you take Lawrence of Arabia and try to convert it to "HDR" there is nothing to be gained there. It's a perfectly shot movie.

Recently there was a conversion of some old scifi movies to HDR. Some scenes reviewers they said it looks better, some scenes the film grain shows so badly that it wasnt good idea to add HDR filters.

New movies are shot with digital cameras with fat RAW files full of dynamic range. Much easier to process to HDR so audiences get very vivid and detailed images.

NO NO NO NO NO...any changing of any setting to HDR or whatever floats your boat is changing the movie, period, the film is finished and colored correctly, before you download it, trust me, it is fixed, you make things worse, there should be no reason, NONE, to ever have to need to change view settings on an iphone, ipad...You will yes it is better, that is not the point, you have changed the movie, if it was meant to be changed by you, the filmmaker would tell you upfront, the movie maker does have an iphone, ipads, to test how it looks when you get to watch it....

Did you compare (or anyone) compare image quality of iTunes download with google play on ipad pro(2017).

I can swear I find the google play image quality BETTER than the downloaded iTunes copy of the same movie. It just looks more wholesome not in an artificial way. iTunes image looks bland.

I have compared Edge of Tomorrow (which says DolbyVision on iTunes) download with Google Play stream which i bought 1080p like 3 years ago. Hands down google version looks better on the same ipad pro. Tested the same with BvS, WW and Oblivion.
