How do you manage your data with the MBA?

Hey everyone,

Being that most people have under 256gb for storage in their MBA's, how do you keep your drives tidy? I read that the SSD performance may degrade if you have low disk space. Do you run any kind of software via external drives, plugged via USB or wifi?

I have MobileMe and two hard drives plugged into my Airport Extreme. I keep all of my iTunes content on one drive so that I can access it via my Apple TV at home. The other drive is for Time Machine. When I'm away, the drives still appear in the Finder, so I can still access the files. Time Machine does back up remotely, and iTunes will *try* to play content remotely, but always is very choppy and ends up freezing. If iTunes could ever do this, I'd be very happy. But for now, just having wireless access to the files both in my apartment and away is really nice. When I'm in my apartment, I definitely don't want the Air tethered to a desk, which is why I'd recommend having some type of wireless storage system available.

Until Apple updates OS X 10 to provide TRIM access to all Macs, I'd also recommend installing the TRIM Support Enabler discussed in the Mac Pro forums. That should help counteract performance degradation.

256GB is still a lot of space. I have OSX, Win7, Office 2010 for Windows, Office 2011 for Mac, 5 years of email archives, half a dozen movies, and a small music collection and still have more than half of my disk left.

You just have to get out of the mindset of carrying around EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD. There is little reason to need 300 GB of music with you at all times. Instead carry just the music you are currently listening to. Instead of carrying around 50 movies, carry the half a dozen you are actually interested in watching.

exactly what i have done since switching primarilly to a newer air. im even using a 64gb base 11" and ive kinda condensed alot of junk music/movies i had just sitting on my hd on my old macbook pro and it cleared alot of room up for stuff i must have with me at all times. also have a 320gb external lacie rikiki hd i carry with me at all times that has absolutly everything on it with plently of room to spare and i use for my time machine backups. super small portable drive that i hardley ever notice i have with me size wise.
