I'm a new user and the guy at the Mac store said I should get 5 hours of constant talking or 24 hours of iPod use. So far, without listening to music or talking that much, the phone stays charged for a few hours if that.

What am I doing wrong? Can you turn applications off after using them? I've gone through the user manual online, restored the phone, and tried just about everything.

Please help!

First off I think you mean 3G. :)

There are things you can do, ie. turning off location services in the settings menu, but after its all said and done, even if you leave everything on, a few hours of battery life is not right. I would do a couple more full charge recycles and if it keeps up I would be heading to the nearest Apple store to complain.

Viva la Vida.

After a couple cycles through the battery, the life should get better. Right now I've been using my iPhone all day with 3G on, Location Services on, Push enabled and have 7/8's of the battery left. (1 Hour 16 Mins usage / 12 Hours 28 Mins standby). :D :apple: :D

That gives me hope! Especially, since I have similar settings - i.e., everything but bluetooth enabled.

I upgraded from original --> 3G this past Tuesday and noticed the battery life is abysmal. I did my first full charge/discharge cycle last night. Hopefully, things start to improve.

Yes... I too have Location, Push, 3G all active. I leave Bluetooth & Wifi off except when I want to use them. I have the brightness down to ~20%. I get very good battery life after only 3 charges. I was able to have the phone on for almost a day and a half before I got the 20% warning. That was with moderate usage on both 3G, Wifi, and talking.

I leave 3G, wireless, location, Bluetooth and GPS on all the time, don't use Push (I fetch when I feel like it), but I put my screen brightness down to about 30%. That has done the most in terms of preserving my battery.

I did neglect to mention that I turn the brightness down. Hopefully you'll have the same experience as I have. It takes a while to condition the battery.

Good to know about the brightness.

I've done two full discharge/charge cycles and will see if the battery life improves. I have noticed that using Wifi consumes a lot less battery than 3G.

I have conditioned my battery fairly well. I think I went from a full charge to dead about 5 or 6 times. Maybe more. I have gotten to the point where I have turned off location services, wi-fi, and 3G. Unfortunately, I have only been getting about 4 hours of usage. I usually get the 20% warning after about 3 hours and 20 minutes. Because of all the stuff that I have had to turn off, it is basically the same as my wife's original iPhone. It is very frustrating to have an incredible phone that you can barely use. That is unless you are next to a wall outlet at all times.
