I have been looking around, but didn't know how to search for related matter so I just decided to ask in hope that someone will give me a simple answer.

How do you prevent PB from going to sleep when the lid is closed?

You can't. However, if it is connected to an external display, mouse, and keyboard you can wake it up again by pushing a button. This way you can use the computer with the lid shut.

I may be wrong, but as far as I know, the only way a PB will remain awake when the lid is closed is if it detects that it's attached to an external display. And my 500 MHz G4 must also be attached to its power adapter. Attaching my PB to an external monitor on battery causes it to snooze immediately.

There are some apps around which allow you to do that. You can check versiontracker. I once had an app called sleepless. It advertised that the pb would stay awake with lid closed. But it doesn't work well, the pb goes to sleep in like 10 minutes.
But if you get something, post it because I want such an app too.

cheers
