How do you 'quit' iPod on the iPhone

So last night I was listening to some tunes on the iPhone on the way into town. When I wanted to stop the music I went into the iPod section and pressed pause on the controls.

However, in the top right I still had the little 'play' icon and I could find now way of fully quiting the application. In the end I had to power off the phone and restart.

Am I missing something?

My play thing goes away after I pause. Maybe a glitch?

Holding down the home key for several seconds will quit an application and return you to home screen.

Press "pause" and then press the home key and go about your business.
