I have unrarx which I want to set as standard for rar files, and VLC which I want as standard for any video.

on windows I would just right click a rar file, choose "open with", locate VLC and check the box saying "use this for all similar files" or whatever it said.

If I do the same thing on Mac it doesn't work. I right click and choose open with and all that stuff, but it doesn't recognize and I still have quicktime and unarchiver (garbage) as standard programs

Now playing: Kontra Krew - Giv Mig Et Skilt
via FoxyTunes

Right click the document/file you want to change. Click on 'get info' Scroll down to the 'Open With' now select the application. If you want to change that for all file types like that one, click on "Change All..."

I have both, OpenOffice and MS Office on my Macbook.
Somehow setting the application preference does not stick. I have set it to open documents with MS Office, but every so often they default back to OpenOffice. :(

Does anybody have and idea why and how to fix this permanently?

Sounds like OpenOffice is resetting the associations, check its preferences.

I don't have OO installed, so I can't point to anything specific.

Thanks anyway.

I just had a closer look at the problem, and maybe OO is not to blame here. OSX is case sensitive for file-extensions.

I just found an .XLS (uppercase) file that was still associated with OO, while the .xsl (lowercase) is associated with Excel - weird
