I was wondering about this - As I am under the impression that using an app for tracking data usage might use up some battery in the background?

Are they accurate?

Would love to hear your responses as I have a monthly allotment that needs to be adhered to to avoid massive extra charges on my account.

I use My Data Manager. I believe it runs in the background and eats up a small amount of battery life.

I'm on Verizon. The Verizon app has a today widget that shows data usage. :)

More often than not it's better to use the carriers specific app as a lot of data packages are based on both upload and download.

On both my iPhone and Note5 I use the MyEE app to let me know when I'm coming close to my data cap.

Australia YES Optus. I only use My Optus to track usage. It can update data in real time. Only drawback is I need to check it regularly. I can even recharge my bill within app, or ask for support. Very powerful.

I use My Data Manager. It does run in the background (although I have background app refresh off, it constantly updates as long as the phone is not shut off in the middle), but it uses tiny amount of battery. Its usage never shows up in battery usage breakdown.

I also use Settings>Cellular for breakdown.

Interestingly, both are always somewhat off by 100~200mb or so. Usually the app reports higher usage than what is shown in Settings>Cellular.

UL data on 4 VZW lines, with backdoor upgrades on each line for 4 years. I. Don't. Care. :evil grin:

UL data on 3 ATTWS lines, courtesy of my DirecTV link. I. Don't. Care. :evil grin:

I know some fellow friends with Verizon have a data widget they can put in there notifications bar thing. Does anyone know if AT&T has anything like this?

I use my Telco's app, but it's quite cumbersome, since it's basically a repackaged web app and quite slow and cumbersome to access.
