I still suck at it a few weeks later lol

granted it’s not 12.9 bad but not on the level of mini easy or even 9.7 from recollection. Never had 10.5 but think it was similar

I use the smaller keyboard with my thumb. But typing on the iPad in portrait mode is not very easy I agree. I wish there was some sort of handoff to iPhone like on the Apple TV.

edit- I have 12.9 but should still relate.

At some point in the past, there was a split keyboard (at least on the 12,9" model) which was great for typing. Don't know, why Apple ditched it. ?

When I have to use the onboard keyboard with my iPad Pro 11, I flip it landscape and use it like a full blown keyboard. I have never gotten used to portrait keyboard in all the years I've used an 11' iPad Pro. (4 now).

I literally went WTF. When I purchased the 12.9 in 2018.. I use the iPad in landscape on my chest and type with my thumbs with my fingers at the top.the 12.9 was so uncomfortable… I returned it almost specifically because of that... k do however use my iPads for leisurely use

Split keyboard is in the new iPadOS beta. Just swipe apart with your thumbs and the keyboard splits in two. Bring your thumbs together to merge the keyboard again. This works in portrait and landscape. I did this on my iPad mini 5. Will check on my 12.9 when I can.

This may be in the existing version of iPadOS too.

Edit: iPad Pro has a floating keyboard which doesn’t split. Bummer.

The first few hours felt weird but since then I’ve been typing with my thumbs no problem and not much slower than on my phone. On the other hand, I just tried typing in landscape mode and couldn’t. I never use it in landscape though, apart from movie watching, so it isn’t an issue.
