I'm sure this has been asked before and I have googled this and can't get a straight answer. I have an jailbroken iPhone 5 that is using iOS 6.1 and I would like to update it to 6.1.2 and keep it jailbroken. How would I go about doing this? Do I have to completely restore my device then jailbreak it again or is there a better alternative? Also is it even necessary to update to the current iOS? Is there anything that could help the performance of my phone in the update like longer battery life or security fixes?

You can't. Back up your iPhone, restore to 6.1.2, jailbreak again.

Aside from the fact that there is really nothing in 6.1.1 or 6.1.2 that's worth the inconvenience of updating, here's how to do it.

1. Backup your iPhone (iTunes or iCloud)
2. Backup your Cydia packages (there's a few backup apps in Cydia)
3. Restore to 6.1.2.
4. Jailbreak
5. Recover your backup (meaning restore from the iTunes/iCloud backup)
6. Restore from the Cydia package backup.

As to battery life. Mine has been pretty good, but I do use a tweak called Smart 3G+LTE. BatteryDoctorPro is also another good tweak and it has an LTE switch now.

Be aware that 6.1.3 is in beta and it breaks the current jailbreak. So, if you are going to update do it soon or you'll be stuck on your current version.

This is good advice when updating to a minor .1 version bug fix... which is exactly what you were asking. However it should be noted that when upgrading to a new major version release (if it has been confirmed to have a working jailbreak) you should always restore as a new phone and not restore from backup. If you use iCloud it is very easy to then restore your photos, contacts, etc. without loading old system and application crap that may be obsolete. A jailbroken phone that has been setup as new is amazingly smooth as opposed to a restored backup so I try to do it when possible. I think it prevents a lot of issues you see posted here. Including my own. :)

My iPhone 5 has the best battery life of any of the past firmware versions now that it is on 6.1.2
Cool!

It'd have to be super amazing for me to do this though. My iPhone 5 has been great on battery life on each point version I've had it on and that's all been pre-jailbreak, pre-battery tweaks. Some days I give it heavy use and go to bed with about 20-30% battery remaining. My day starts at 6am and I'm usually in bed anywhere from 11:30pm to 2am so I consider this to be pretty good. I'm still on 6.1.

Hiya!

I had the same problem. My phone was probably jailbroken. I tried to restore it and I got a message afterwords:

via iTunes: we are unable to continue with your activation at this time.

on my iphone: Your iphone couldnt be activated because the activation server is temporary unavailable. try connecting your iphone to itunes to activate it or try again in a couple of minutes.

Any ideas what`s going on?

thanks

Which iPhone do you have? Is it the 3GS?

Or I might have an idea, forecast says its unlockable via ultrasnow... the only thing I know about ultrasnow is that its a software...

So do you guys have any advice?

It should be unlocked as its working with three and lebara sim cards as well.

ok, here is my story:

Sooo I have an iPhone 3GS (new bootrom). It`s jailbroken and have a 4.1 ios. I`d love to update my phone as it`s kinda useless now, I cannot use any apps any more.

I got an advice to restore it with iTunes as I don`t really care if it`s jailbroken and unlocked or not as I`m not using my other sim card any more. But at the same time... I don`t want to lose my texts, my contacts, and especially the game I`ve been playing for half a year.

I was told if I backup with iTunes and than restore, I have to start my phone as a new device and after it was updated for the newest ios, I cannot restore from backup as my phone was jailbroken earlier.

The main thing is that I don`t want to lose the game :S I tried to upgrade it with redsnow but I got the same error: `Found device in DFU mode instead of Recovery Mode` It`s weird because it did ask me to put it in DFU mode.

Help is much appreciated and sorry about my poor english, still learning the language!

sooo...

I restored it twice. and got that message. last time I tried to update it I had to bring it to a guy who put back ios 4.1 and he said he couldnt update it. but this time i wanted to try if i can restore it, and here i am again, same problem.

can you help?

thank you :)

If the guy that JB and restored it before told you it cant be updated its most likely cause it would be a tethered JB if you go up to 6.1.3
I'd bring it to him and have it back it up and restore from backup so you don't lose any of your data like texts and game progress.
As you can tell JB, unlocking and general iphone hacking is not simple so if you're not 100% positive you know what you're doing I wouldn't go any further.
I'd just bring it to someone that knows.

I solved the problem :) Found a video on youtube.

Thanks for your time anyway :) It`s 5:25 in the morning here, so I`m going to bed :)

thank you and have a great day/night :)

Hi I have a iPhone 4S that is running ios 6.1. I used a program called Evasion to jailbreak, & I would like to know what is the best way for me to go about updating to the current ios 7. Do I have to restore back to ios 6.1 & then do the update.?? Any advice would be hugely appreciated :)

If you no longer care about your jailbreak, connect that iPhone to iTunes and click Restore. Note: You will not be able to downgrade to iOS 6 and you will not be able to jailbreak it.

Sorry I'm relatively new to this stuff & a little confused. So when I click restore, will it automatically restore to ios 6.1.? Or do I have to download the file(ios6.1) first. And restore back to it.?

When you click Restore, iTunes will download iOS 7 and restore that to your iPhone. There is no way to restore to iOS 6.1.

Another quick question once I have updated to ios 7, can I restore to my previous back up. Or will that not work coz it was a jail broken back up.? Just want to how to keep my contacts & msgs mainly..

Yes you can restore from your previous backup.
