How do you use promo codes?

I feel like an idiot asking this, but can someone explain for me?

There have been a couple threads where dev. were giving away promo codes that i didn't jump on cause I couldn't figure out where to put them in...

In iTunes on the right side, click on Redeem and enter the code there.

go onto the main itunes store page and on the very right it shows a link that says redeem

If you're talking about from the iPhone itself there doesn't seem to be a way to redeem a code in the app store app but in the iTunes app there is a redeem button at the top left of the downloads screen. I haven't used that for a promo code for an app yet but have used it for gift certificates in the past.

Same button for gift certificates, iTunes Gift Cards, and Promo Codes. And it's top right, not left.
