Based upon my limited knowledge thus far of the way you start out using the iPad, my understanding is that you sync it with iTunes and select how you want to fill it... perhaps with a backup from your iPhone 3GS.

If this is true, all of the apps currently on your iPhone 3GS will show up on the new iPad after syncing. But I don't want alot of those apps since I've purchased HD versions specifically for the iPad. Will there be a way to delete only certain apps from the iPad without worry that it will effect my iPhone 3GS?

In the future, when I buy an HD app off the iTunes store, will it automatically be added to the iPad during syncing? The same thing with regular apps?

No problem at all. iTunes allows you to manage all of that. You decide which apps sync to which device. Which media etc.

We have 3 iPhones and one iPad all syncing to the same computer.

iTunes keeps each device separate. I have 5 iPhones, two iPod touches and two iPads all synced to the same computer and they're all managed independently though all have access to the same library of music, movies, TV episodes, photos and apps.

I am syncing both from a PC and they are treated as separate devices. The only problem is that it doesn't sync my calendar and my 1password. It's probably better when syncing from a Mac.

As mentioned, each iDevice is treated separately. Select your iPad in iTunes' "Source" list on the left, then click on the "Apps" tab. You will then see a list of apps and if you uncheck the ones that you do not want installed on your iPad, iTunes will not sync those apps.

Pretty simple, but not obvious.

We have 2 iPhones and an iPad and we all have different apps on our devices.

Calendar syncs fine for me. Only problem I have is double contact entries on the iPad. I believe the problem lies in settings so I'll figure it out eventually.

Not sure about 1 password but did you check your settings? Just a thought.

lol I don't wanna sound too condescending but yeah Apple software is pretty simple. You can sync your iPhone backup to your iPad and take off apps and put 'em on.

Not too complex :)

Right, but I have deleted iPhone apps off my iPhone and the next time I sync, iTunes puts the apps right back on the device again.

Was hoping this wouldn't happen if I did the same thing with the iPad.

That's odd. When I delete apps from my iPhone / iPad / iPod touch, they stay deleted when I sync.

You have to delete from iTunes. I think if you just delete from your iPhone it will re-sync if you havent deleted it from iTunes too

+1
iTunes is your mission control (Houston) for your iPhone/iPad and unless if you make the change in iTunes next time you synch iTunes restores your phone to the same settings as last time. You need to uncheck the apps in iTunes and they won't load next time.

Nope. I have over 500 apps in iTunes but only a few dozen on each of my iDevices

You don't have to delete it. You just need to uncheck the box in iTunes. That will leave it in iTunes for others to use, but keep it from re-syncing to your iDevice.

That is definitely the way to do it if all else fails, but for me, apps have always been automatically unchecked when I delete them on my iDevices.
