Do they do it by name or by the iPhone serial # itself?

I'm curious because the iPhone I just got a week ago has a crack on the corner (underside) of the screen, and I want a replacement, not just a screen change.

I don't know if I should tell them this is what's wrong with it because they may just offer to replace the screen, or tell them I have a battery issue which will guarantee a replacement.

I've had 2 other replacements in the past, but they were with different phones so I'm wondering if they will know how many times I've gotten replacements just based on my name and AT&T account. Thanks

They keep track by your account, Every phone that you get is correlated to your AT&T account and all your information. So ALL of the replacements are in their system. Haven't you noticed when you get a replacement from them that they have you fill out a paper that already contains all of your information on it.....They keep track for the account, not phone by phone.

In the UK I don't think they care LOL. I've never received any type of form for my past 2 replacements. All I get is a sheet saying they shipped it all the way off to Ireland to run tests and other stuff. Maybe to justify the 4 week wait :rolleyes:

First of all, how is Apple liable because you cracked your screen? Secondly, if by some miracle they do think they're liable for your negligence, what's wrong with just getting the screen ( which IS the broken part ) replaced?

Thirdly, saying you have battery issues does not guarantee a replacement, I don't know what gave you that idea. They have ways to find out how fast your battery is draining.

Finally, why are you trying to work the system to get a new iPhone? Why not just take responsibility for your actions? I can understand expecting a replacement for manufacturer defects, but expecting it because of damage you did? That makes no sense.

believe it or not, crackled screens are a known defect on the iPhone. Granted, they can probably tell if you dropped it, took a baseball bat to it, or it broke due to their manufacturing flaw...

How can a cracked screen that wasn't cracked when you got it be a manufacturer defect? They give you the phone to look at while they process paperwork, so you see it before you accept it. I'm just curious.

Yes there is a record on your account, but that will not influence their replacement policies in any way. So don't worry about it, the more replacements you get the more you should complain. They're not the ones going back several times just for defects, lol why are you worried about that?

First of all, stop assuming things. The phone came with the crack, I didn't notice it until almost a week later. Secondly, if a phone I payed $300 for came with a crack on the screen, whether it interferes or not, I want a new phone and not the screen fixed. It's within 30 days so I should be eligible for that, if not I'll cancel my contract since It's still within the 30 day period.

Thirdly, saying I have a battery issue has gotten me three iPhone 3G replacements. Apple doesn't take chances with battery issues, they told me flat out. So again, stop acting like you know their policies more than anyone else here.

First, if you didn't see the "crack" that was there when you bought it, you're an.... let's just say you deserve to have a cracked iPhone. Plus if you didn't see it until a week later, how do you know it was there when you bought it?
Second, See first statement.
Third, you're a liar.... and you expect apple to fix your problem. Karma is a beotch so keep an eye out for her!

Well maybe the crack is so small he overlooked it in the happiness of having a new iPhone, post a pic of the crack so we can see it.

lol iphone screens dont come pre cracked buuuut if it IS such a wide know issue (surely they would know).....why not just tell the genius that as opposed to lying

solve that riddle for me

Dude, I'm not even gonna bother trying to convince you that the screen came like that out of the box. It did and that's that. If you think iPhone's come out of the box scratch, crack, problem free then you couldn't be any more wrong.

ok then tell the genious the truth as opposed to lying about it if its such a widely known issue

the mere fact that you want to blame it on another issue besides the crack is shady if it truely is a manu defect.. see my point?

anyways best of luck and let us know what happens

It's based on serial numbers, not an AT&T account (at least not anymore ... what about the people with original iPhones whose contracts have run out and are now using them as iPods or whatever?)

At any rate, even if you tell them you have a battery issue, if they see that crack they will ask you about it and then you're gonna have to explain that anyway (since if it was accidental your warranty would be voided anyway, battery issue or not).

So tell them the truth. Do you really think the genius isn't going to know what's going on? They probably get a who knows how many people a day lying about things that are obviously not true? ("This giant spider crack on the screen, I don't know how it got there! I woke up this morning and somehow it was there!")
