Ive heard that when you buy an iPhone 3gs you activate it on the specfic network you want on itunes. Does this mean that if i buy an Orange/02 locked iPhone when Vodafone brings out its iPhone i can just plug it in and activate it to vodafone using itunes or is the phone locked to the specific network...

Thanks

Do you mean Pay as you go, if so then it would be a case of connecting itunes and downloading the carrier file:p

Yeh i mean Pay as you go.

So this is definetly the case yeh ? I can buy a iPhone 3GS on either orange or 02 and then when vodafone iphone comes out i can sync the phone with itunes and choose vodafone ??

Collectively, I'd say that we're not completely sure about what your proposing. I, myself have accomplished this, I inserted an Orange SIM into my O2-Locked iPhone and could switch it back and forth. However others report that they were unable to do this, while others could like me. If you're correct, you're saying that a carrier lock is applied upon Activation and first sync of the iPhone. I believe they are doing this in Canada, but once again there's no definitive answer I can give you. Both Orange and O2 will unlock your iPhone however. On Pay and Go on O2 you have to be on their network for at least 12 months before you can unlock.

Hope this helps. :)

Thanks for the help. I was basically asking if i buy an orange or 02 iPhone 3GS use it on 02 and then will i be able to use it with a vodafone sim when vodafone releases its iPhone.

So instead of waiting for the vodafone iphone to come out can i buy one now and then activate it on vodafone.

If you buy it on O2, it will be locked to O2 and remain locked unless you go down the route of unlocking it via O2, which officially means after 12mths on PAYG, or immediately on contract, but with an obligation to continuing to pay your contract.

It will not allow you to switch to O2, Orange, Vodafone etc at will via iTunes unless you unlock it.

But some people are reporting just this. They insert the orange sim and voila, and the same back to O2.
