I have an operating system 9.1 and none of the newer browsers will work on it. I have had a mac for the last 15 years but never got into it other than the basics. Can the system itself be upgraded. How much does that cost? Or, am I stuck with buying a new computer. Thanks in advance.

you need:
PowerPC G5, G4 or G3 processor
Built-in FireWire
DVD drive is required for installation At least 256MB of RAM
i'm pretty sure that your iMac can take it.
if it were me, i wouldn't wait till Leopard bc i hear they're dropping G3 support and it's gonna take more to run it basically.

What do you mean by specs? Where would I find that? Basically, I use the computer to serf the net. I never even figured out how to run the video part. Wow. I'm at a loss for words - but at least, go into your system prefs (not sure what the OS 9 equivalent of that is) and check for something that says "About This Mac" - to give us an idea of what hardware you have, how much ram you have, etc... You might not have the specs (specifications) to install OS X, and you might want to buy a cheap newer Mac (perhaps a Macbook or an inexpensive iMac) if you only need to surf the net/light computing.

Are you sure you have OS 9.1? Your last post made it sound like you were running system 7. If that is true, you are sporting a performa, not an imac. If it is an imac, does it have a tray to put cd's in? If that is so, you can only go to 10.3.
To do any OSX upgrade you will need to buy 2 128mb sticks of ram at least. Depending on what model you have (tray or slot), you should be able to do this for $15 slot or 20-25 tray. The next step is to find another mac person with an OSX cd.
Also at the extreme least get 10.2. Shoot for panther 10.3. Even with a 266 G3. Firefox will work fine. (youtube will be disappointing even if you right-click>quality>low)
If you really just have a performa that someone painted, check out system 7 today.

Our office Macs are stuck on OS9 and iCab seems to have more success with a lot of websites than Internet Explorer. It's not perfect, but it might do the job for a while.

Thank you again for the responses. Yes, I am sure it is an IMAC. At least that is what it says! It also says 9.1. I am sure I will raise a few eyebrows, but I picked it because of the cute flowers on the side. Thought it went well with my Monet theme. It is good to know I can do something to it because I think it is so environmentally irresponsible to keep buying computers and then what happens to the old ones? Thanks again

I'm not trying to tell you how to live your life or how to arrange your priorities, but perhaps you should consider the following:
- Your computer is much less energy-efficient than today's computers, so you're using more power in a less efficient and less environmentally-friendly way.
- The disservice you're doing to your eyes by gluing them to a tube monitor.
- The general dissatisfaction you must experience when using your computer in its surely slow, unreliable, and limited capacity.
Your current computer can be donated to a school or local organization where it can be put to limited, specific use. Using it as your regular computer isn't more eco-friendly than buying a new one, and you're missing out on much of what today's world of information, education, and entertainment has to offer.

It doesn't sound patronizing at all. I really appreciate you pointing out than angle because I would not have thought of it. Global warming is such a concern to me I have given up my car. Unfortunately, budgetary concerns are practical constraints, so I am going to try that alternate browser suggested above. I asked a few months in advance of making any purchase to see what my options were.

This is a Flower Power 500mhz imac. It has plenty of speed for general tasks. It should even do youtube ok. It does not waste that much power to run. It is less efficient, but it does what it should. I have 2 of these running all the time with an imac g5 and a powerbook. Usually all these are running with an air conditioner in Alabama! My power bills at the house never go over $90.
Now that I know what you have:

Install Tiger
Enjoy a relatively rare computer
When you have the money to upgrade, just keep it around as an itunes jukebox. It has wonderful loud Harmon Karmon Speakers!

p.s. Have you ever heard of Fort Payne in the Eastern part of the state? My late father lived there. As does my present 1/2 sister. Was raised by my Polish side, but I guess the other 1/2 of my ancestors lived in the Alabama hills since before the Revolutionary War. And the Cherokees before then. I was really impressed by how much geographic beauty the state of Alabama has.

Yes, I live 45 minutes from there. Sock Capitol of the world. Its quite nice up there good hiking and great fishing. PM me if you're ever around the area.
If money is a constraint, you might consider finding a copy of Panther (OS X 10.3) on ebay. Since it's an old OS, there are likely to be a number of copies available for what should be a pretty low price. (Obviously confirm that it's not a pirated copy and that the seller does not have it installed any longer). Or, if you wait a couple of months, Tiger will also drop in price. Once purchased, you can upgrade Panther for free from Apple, and that will get you system software that's pretty recent and will let you use basically any current browser.
