I’ve never done this before, but I’m wondering how to do it - trying to decide about keeping my 14 pro or returning and going back to my 13 mini, and I would have to update software, so I’m curious how complicated that would be.

If you're not running beta software on your iPhone 14 Pro, you won't need to put beta software on your 13 mini either. Otherwise you can join the Apple Public Beta Program.

All you need to do is update your mini. The 16.0.1 release is the current release we all have.

I didn’t think that release was for older phones - thought it was only for the 14. I’m so confused. I don’t understand all this crap obviously.

Will it just prompt me to do that update while I’m transferring data?
16.0 is probably new enough that your transfer will work, but there's an update due to be released next week, presumably 16.0.2 for all phones, which should remove any incompatibility without needing to use beta software.

Well, just wanting to get this return going if I am indeed returning it.

I would just try transferring your data back to the mini to see if it works before going down the route of installing a beta version. If it works, great! If it doesn't work, you could potentially wait until next week if you still have enough time for the return. There should be an update coming for all devices.

And to hopefully clear up some confusion, there are a couple ways to get data back onto your old phone.
  1. Backup and restore. This is where the versioning definitely comes into play. You can't restore a backup made from say 16.1 to a device running 16.0.
    • I'm not entirely sure if the 3rd number matters. It probably does, but someone will need to confirm if a 16.0.1 backup cannot be restored to 16.0.0, or you could just try it and see if you get a message about the version differences.
  2. Quick Start transfer. I don't know if the versioning really matters here. Apple's documentation doesn't mention it, like it does for the backup and restore method.

Just backup the 14 to iCloud and turn on all the iCloud sync settings. Everything on iCloud should restore to the older iPhone. When you set it up with the iCloud account.

Okay it wouldn’t restore from the 14 pro backup because it was on 16.0.1, but I had a backup from last Friday, and that worked (Well, it’s working - not done).

The only thing is the eSim didn’t transfer my number back - gonna have to run to ATT and get that handled, or just get another SIM card.
