How does restocking fee work?

My problem, let's say I buy a Macbook Pro on the 8th, but I never open it. A few weeks later - Meroms MBPs come out. Do I have to pay a restocking fee if I wanted to get the new Merom MBPs? (and assuming that I have to pay additional money if the new MBPs do cost extra)

You get 2 weeks to return an unopened item for a full refund. After that, its yours whether you like/opened it or not.


If you do open it, Apple charges you a restocking fee, which means you basically pay for someone else's discount on a 'refurbished' item. Since Apple can't sell an open box item as new.

Once you buy an item from Apple, you have 14 days to return it. If it's BTO (Built to Order) you cannot return unless DoA.

If it's standard and you have opened it you can return it but have to pay 10% restocking fee. However if it's defective then you don't have to pay the restocking fee even if opened.

If you never opened it you can return it for a full refund within the 14 day period.

If 14 days have passed then the product is yours no matter if you opened it or not, or if it is defective or not.
