How does screen on last year's 24" 2.4 compare to newer 24" 2.8?

I am a total newb and finally have the $$ to buy an Imac. I want to be as frugal as possible while getting the best I can afford. It will mainly be used for heavy photo editing.

I was going to go with the aluminum 20" but after reading this forum I understand the 20" to have serious problems and that the 24" was superior. But then I read that the 24" isn't all that great either. So I'm wondering, is the aluminum 24" 2.4 display which is now on clearance any different (better/worse) than the current 24" display? And if I load the 2.4 24" up with 4gb ram do you think it will meet my needs? I am *not* a gamer. Just photo editing mainly. And I also plan to run Windows apps on it as well.

Thank you. Actually they are new on clearance, not the refurbished ones, but probably the same screen as now, no?

How do you like your 20"? I was originally going to go with that but heard problems with being able to view it from different angles. Have you had an opportunity to compare it to a 24"?

I haven't had an opp. to compare them, but I heard the same thing -- that the 24" definitely is a better quality LCD. You are also correct about the viewing angles; the 20" has a bit smaller viewing angle (both vertical and horizontal) than the 24".

However, after a color calibration using SuperCal, the 20" looks awesome and is pretty reasonably priced to boot!

I am very pleased with my purchase and didn't find a need to go any bigger. I had the 17" iMac prior to this one and was like: "Dang, that is massive" when I bought the 20". Just max out the RAM and you will be pleased.

The 24'' is an amazingly beautiful screen, if you read the total screen bleed 24'' forum(which I think you mean with it not being all that great) you will see that it are 3 people taking 3/4 of the forum on their names, so it are just some problems in the middle of very many good ones.

Get the 4GB's for sure the 2.4 is very good and the 2.8 will be even better, depends on what you can afford but with extreme photo editing you will notice the difference for sure. Hope I helped you out here!

Thank you so much. That is very helpful. Right now I have a little 13" Vaio laptop and haven't had a desktop for a decade, so I'm sure the 20" will seem massive enough. I'll do a little research into using Supercal and determine whether or not that would be a good option for me. I really don't *need* a 24 incher.

As far as SuperCal goes, its a free program but isn't trivial to use. You are the maker of your screens destiny. If you have a really good eye, then you will be all set.
