How expensive will the new iMac be ??

Well a 24" iMac with Applecare comes in at just under £1500 ..... would the new version of the iMac cost about the same ??

More importantly, is it feasible that Apple would be able to squeeze in a decent 8800 graphics card, TV tuner, 500/1000Gb hard disk and HD/BluRay drive ..... all together for that kinda price ??

Graphics could be a possibility, but don't expect a TV Tuner (to region specific i.e. increased manufacturing costs- PAL, NTSC, SECAM etc..) or HD/Blu-Ray at that price point. It's possible that in the future HD/Blu-Ray may be a built-to-order spec - but to the best of my knowledge there aren't any slot loading variants as yet.
A 500GB HD will definitely be a BTO option if not stock config.

I'd agree except for the first item. I think your more likely to see a 8600 in the iMac.

I was wondering about the possibilty of a desktop processor? Maybe a core 2 extreme? I love the idea of a better vid card but it will not be much good without a better processor.

If the enclosure is indeed 2 inches thick or less, then absolutely no chance of a desktop processor.

For gaming, I'm reasonably sure the bottleneck for current iMacs is the video card.

If I can get a 30" ACD for 1800 dollars, then the 500 dollar computer in you iMac Pro is going to be really awful.

I agree. I think with EA move to start developing for Mac, and the fact that ID is developing a Gaming engine that will work on Mac, that this will be indicative of apple needing to step up their Graphic card offers.

I'm not saying these are going to be that cards they wold offer but i believe that this wold a a wise choice:

Option one:

17" with 8600GT 256M stock
20" with 8600GT 256M stock or optional upgrade to 8600GTS 256M
24" with 8600GT 256M stock or optional upgrade to 8600GTS 256M

Option two:

17" with 8600GT 256M stock
20" with 8600GT 256M stock or optional upgrade 8600GTS 256M
24" with 8600GT 256M stock or 8600GTS 256M stock or 8800GTS 320M optional upgrade


I do not see Apple using any ATI cards, I'm sorry but ATI has pure crap for cards at the moment and it would be stupid for Apple to offer a inferior card while they are pushing for developer to make games for the Mac. Nvidia is the superior card maker.

The reason why I choose those card are because of power consumption. They consume a lot less power compared to the 8800 GTX and Ultra. Even the 8800 GTS with 640M consumes to much power.

Well, no, obviously Apple's cost for an ACD isn't the same as their price for it. But there isn't enough of a premium for the 30" iMac Pro to justify the almost two-fold increase in screen-size, and the probable spec increase over the 24".

In the unlikely event that the mini is discontinued, and not replaced with a comparable product, i would imagine that iMacs would drop to around the price of a higher spec'd mini.

Well, this is the problem with gaming iMacs. Power comsumption and heat. If you look at DirectX10 games - i.e. Company of Heroes, you need a 8800GTS 640MB for reasonable framerate. Yeah I know, this is insane, but this is what benchmarks show.
So, from that point of view, gamer need a tower mac with a strong PSU (430-550W) with a nice cooling solution and BTO option 8800GTX and a suitable CPU, like the Quad 2.4GHz.

And yes, ATi is totally out of control since the AMD deal, even their high end card is no high end card and the HD2400/2600 are just crap.
