A. just jailbreaking
B. jailbreaking and limewire/torrents
C. all that and cracked apps (installous)

hehe just wondering. i didn't put this in the hacks section for a reason...

And that reason would be?
I'm guessing so it can be moved? Creating more problems for Mods, which will invariably lead to you getting banned.
Good move.
 
hacking isn't the same as pirating, I have no idea what your trying to figure out. limewire/torrents and using appulo.us are all methods of pirating copy-writed material, is one worse than the other?

that question was kind of rhetorical really, and more directed at the OP, but yeah I agree, they're no different.

Although people do seem to view them differently on MR, but that's expected because a lot of members are developers and whatnot. I wonder if those people who scold posts about pirating apps would do the same if I brought up pirating music/movies. I guess it all leads back to who we think we're hurting when we pirate, its morally permissible to steal from a record company or movie studio but not from a developer, right? What if I only pirate apps from EA or other large game studios, is that more acceptable? I know all pirating is illegal, but is one worse (morally) than another? Again, it all leads back to who we think we're stealing from, right?
Just thinking out loud, thoughts?

Well it depends in the person. Techically pirating isn't stealing, it's sharing. My mom always told me to share :)
 
I haven't started yet, but I am going to get around to it eventually. I'd just like to jailbreak it so I can put whatever apps I want on it, not what Apple says I am allowed to.

Not sure what your expecting everyone to say...? I doubt many folks are going to come on here and admit to pirating. :rolleyes:

I can say the thread title is really misleading...

How about-

How far do you go with your hacking?


And an acceptable response would be...

I can use SSH fairly well and can swap themes and apps pretty easily once inside.
 
I don't see what any of this has to do with hacking. Jailbreaking is not hacking, it's running someone else's hack. The rest are even less hackish.
 
Jailbroken .... of course, and I've also created and installed my own carrier bundle file to get rid of the stupid group MMS functionality as well as install my own carrier logo. On top of that I've installed quite a few applications and if I like them I buy them from the app store. I've been burnt a couple of times buying apps without trying them first and they've turned out to be useless, or games where the game play just sucked!. So having a jailboken phone so you can test drive some of the apps is a must have because the write up on the app store cannot be trusted in most cases.
 
If you made it a poll where nobody can see I'm sure you would get more honest votes... I doubt anyone will admit to installing cracked apps.
 
I jailbroke my iphone for the denial of service attack / cell phone tower destruction features. But maybe that's just me. ;) :rolleyes: [/sarcasm]

that's an interesting thought. I freely admit to illegally downloading music but I would feel bad illegally downloading apps, and I think it's probably because we interact daily with developers here. Hypocritical of me, I know :eek:

That's not true. I'll admit to it. I know it's wrong, but I do it anyway. The truth is we all do things in life that we know are wrong. It's up to each of us to decide what our threshold is for "how wrong" something has to be before we won't do it. Technically, speeding in a car is "wrong" b/c you are endangering other people's lives on the road, but most of us are ok with doing that. On the other end of the spectrum, most of us wouldn't commit murder b/c that is "too wrong" for us to do.

So, for me, personally, I consider installing cracked apps to be wrong, but not THAT wrong.

Just my .02$, but I'm sure the flames will follow anyway.
