I know core duo processors can multi task better than pentium 4s. But in terms of numbers what pentium 4 speed is equalvalent to a core duo 2.0 ghz speed?

I believe that for almost any task, a 2ghz Core Duo is faster than any Pentium 4 that was ever released. I have seen benchmarks to suggest this, but I have also seen benchmarks to suggest otherwise. The best way that I can think of off the top of my head to compare this, is that according to Apple's own benchmarks, the G5 compared favorably to the Pentium 4, and the Core Duo is much faster than the G5.
I'm sure a Overclocked 5 ghz pentium 4 is more expensive/faster/less stable than a Core Duo. It's just not effective anymore to have the highest MHZ/GHZ, it's all about the cores these days, dual-core, quad-core, sooner-or-later octo-core.

It wouldn't surprise me to see a Core Duo out perform a 5ghz Pentium 4 (Unreasonable to achieve 5GHz, but possible). GHz per GHz, the Core Duo gets more done than the Pentium, plus it has the advantage of dual cores.

I'll never understand people's concern with processor speed comparisons. The only thing I care is that what I have, or what I want to buy, can run what I need it to run and do it smoothly. My G4 does everything I need it to do, and it does it well. Is it faster than a P4 at the same frequency, I don't know and I don't care. All I know is that I don't need anything faster.
That said, I would like an Intel Mac so I can have Windows available to me when I need it (which is somewhat often due to the fact that there is no Kinnexus for Mac... yet.)

Two frequencies can't be added like that. So, when they say that a dual core CPU runs at 2GHz, each core runs on a 2GHz clock signal.Willis said:

Core 2 Duo's have already been OC'd to 3.8/4Ghz.
