how fast should shuld phone go on home 802.11n ?

I was wondering how fast others phones went on their home networks?

my home network has a time capsule as the router set at 802.11n (and allows 802.11b and 802.11g), connected to a DSL modem via the WAN. Security being WPA2.


My iMac and wife’s lap-top all connect to the internet and upload and down load at speeds just below being connected to the modem them self.

However my iPhone is really only slightly quicker than 3G. ie takes about 5 sec to download a mobile page eg: m.cnn.com, 10-15 sec for full site. For a 1 min You-tube video, 3-5 min to download.

Is this normal performance?
Any suggestions on how to boost it?

Buy faster Internet service.

Wireless network speed is MEANINGLESS. If you have a wireless network, it won't make dial-up instantly faster, as is the common thought.

NO ISP provides service that can come anywhere NEAR 802.11n transfer speeds, so they're only relevant for data within the network.

I don't expect that. I just expected my phone to connect to the Internet faster. It is substantialy slower than I expected. (as I was saying, YouTube is next to usless)

Just remember it is only a phone. It's Macbook or iMac.
So pages aren't going to load lightning fast regardless of DSL speed.

4) on iPhone (wifi off, Edge with 5 bars) 118 seconds

I'd be interested to know your times for the same page.

Edit: I re-read your original post about poor youtube performance. When I tap the "Evolution of Dance" youtube video (it's #1 under "Most Viewed", "All") it starts plying in 3-4 seconds and plays out completely without stopping. That's on the iPhone over wi-fi g.

don't know if this helps but I though iPhones were 802.11g only..so it shouldn't really matter what router you have, i beg your pardon if i'm wrong and my comment is useless

No no - you are quite correct, I just upgraded my network to n thinking it would speed up my iphone and then was disappointed to find out it was to no effect.

Must remember to research first, impulse buy second

Try running your iPhone through a network speed test... such as...

You're confounding two issues here. The iPhone is slow in ways that don't have to do with network uplink/downlink speeds. The iPhone won't render that page in four seconds on any connection, regardless of how fast. It's just not fast enough / efficient enough at receiving and rendering web data for this.

In fact, this issue was widely reported even before the iPhone 3G came out. Again, it's a rendering issue. As a comparison point, you'll note that an iPhone on WiFi will download a 5MB song from iTunes faster than it will render a 300kb web page.

So to understand if you really have a network speed issue, you have to do things that involve testing network speed at a more basic level, like the network test linked above.

The most relevant points regarding the iPhone (either model) and network speeds.

Most importantly, do NOT compare it to a full blown computer. It's a small device not capable of full blown speeds like a computer is.

802.11b = 11 Mbits/s Max
802.11g = 54 Mbits/s Max
802.11n = 300 Mbits/s Max

how fast is your DSL? 2-3 Mbits?? a 802.11b is fine for surfing the web. it's slow because your iphone can't render page fast enough.

Thanks for testing that. I was curious to know what a typical wifi surfing experience is. I've always assumed my experience was "typical" but I've never done any controlled comparison to support it.

Having said that, I sort-of jumped the gun in my response to the OP: He was having problems with youtube and I missed that point on the first reading. So I've edited my earlier post (see below) to describe my typical youtube experience over wifi. I'd be interested to hear from others if that's typical?

I get about 3.3mb down on my iPhone (10mb internet) via WiFi at home.

this is about as fast as my iphone is on my home network:

This is on a 20Mb cable connection, my iMac downloads at around 2.3Mb/s on the same connection, connected to AP extreme on gigabit and the iphone runs off an AP express on g.
