How hard to switch a number from Verizon?

I have a few questions about switching an existing number from Verizon.

I have two Verizon phones I will be switching off when my iPhone arrives. I do not want to keep my primary number because it is impossible for anyone to remember but my secondary one (which had been my mothers emergency phone) was a good easy to remember one. BTW: I switched her to a GO Phone because it was cheaper and Verizon was such jerks when I asked about switching down to one phone ( I would have kept moms if they were decent about it).

If you make the choice to switch a number from another carrier does it greatly increase your activation time?

Can I switch a number that is still in a 'plan'? I am afraid to cancel the number early because I think I will immedately not own it to switch it.

If it takes too long to activate, it will be much easier for me to just get a new number.

It shouldn't take long at all. I switched from Verizon mid-contract and the phone was activated and my number was ported in about 15 minutes.

I think all of those delays you heard about earlier was because there was such a large number of people trying to activate their phones at the same time. I got my phone a few days after the launch so it was very quick. I didn't have to wait in line, either.

Thanks for the info. I assume you called Verizon to turn it off after the Activation.

It is good to hear the auto switching of numbers is working better now. I was more concerned about Verizon locking up the number for some reason. A friend switched a number TO Verizon a few years back and it took a couple of days but that was right when they started letting you switch numbers.

I later called Verizon and they told me it was already cancelled.

In fact when you port your number, iTunes warns you that moving an existing number will cancel the existing account, or something to that effect.

What if you are taking one phone off and leaving one on - will porting the number cancel out the other service for the other phone?

Verizon was kind of unclear abotu this with me.

I want to get a phone, port my number, and then change the existing number to an individual plan - without service interuption.
