How has your note taking experience been like?

I've taken notes in 3 of my classes and although it's doable, it's definitely not as easy as a laptop and I don't think it ever will even come close. I could get a dock with keyboard, but that's another $70 or so I have to spend on it and with the bulk and weight it will add to my backpack, makes me wonder if I should just use my laptop instead.

I'm really having a hard time finding a use for my iPad that I can't do on a laptop or my iPhone..any suggestions? I hate returning stuff (esp. with a restocking fee) and I do plan on keeping it or possibly giving it away as a gift in the future, but would love to be able to find a legitimate use for it! Maybe apps in the future will be offering something completely game changing? Something that I want/need and cannot do on my iPhone or laptop? Seems a bit doubtful, but then again, I am a bit of a pessimistic person, lol

Have you tried the handwriting software from phatware? I've tried it on other platforms (e.g., graphics tablet on Windows) with pretty good success. I got an email from them that they have ipad version of some of their products (I don't recall which) but since my 3G ipad isn't here yet I haven't had a chance to try it out.

I've been using mine for notes. I've used memos, evernote and Pages. I like Pages best. If I'm in range of wifi at the end of the class or meeting, I email the notes to myself, otherwise I wait till I get back home to get them off the iPad. There is no way to get notes off the iPad other than usb with itunes or by sending them as email.

Is the iPad a replacement for a netbook or a laptop or a phone or an iPod Touch? Not really. It's better than each of them in a very few ways and worse than all of them in a great many ways. So it depends on your priorities whether an iPad makes sense for you. For goodness sake, don't let a bunch of strangers in a form dictate what you do with your $500. Well, with one exception. You could send the money to me and in return I'll make a nice thread at Macrumors about how I spent it and give you full credit and everything.

I hate to say it but it looks like you need to either buy the keyboard dock or just return it.

I have the BT keyboard and it works great, but I forgot to bring it for today's class.

Maybe I'll find the time to swing by the house on the way to this evening's class and grab it so I can see what it's like using the bt keyboard instead of the onscreen one. I'm not completely satisfied with the onscreen keyboard, but it's marginally good enough for taking notes.

The BT keyboard is probably a better investment. First of all, it works with more than just the iPad. Secondly, it allows you to use it in a LOT more orientations. Lastly, the keyboard dock will not fit if you are using a case, even Apple's smallest case. And I recommend a case if you take your iPad out of the house!
